Ni hao once again!!

This time we have moved on to the Jiangsu province as a small stop off on the way to Shanghai. We took a highspeed train there so instead of taking 20 hours it took 6!! Noice. Having had such a jam-packed schedule in Beijing though, Nanjing came as a bit of a shock. There is not that much to do or see there but luckily we were only there for one full day. We did, however, learn a lot from the 1937 Nanjing massacre memorial hall that we visited; a real plunge into China's identity and experience of the Second World War. It was a very sombre moment in our travels but worth seeing for sure. Everything was respectfully presented but also full of gruesome images of the massacred victims.. Amongst some startling accounts of rape and torture, an aspect of the massacre that deeply impacted me was China's defence of corporal punishment. You saw images of how these Japanese officers that had carried out the massacre were killed "for the greater good of China, they deserved to be killed". Quite a huge difference to our Western way of thinking.

Other than this, we wandered the streets and ate like kings!! Our favourite meal being soup dumplings. Mmmmmmmmm.

Also I forgot to mention the Chinese squatting that they have going on over here! We all stare in awe of these men, women and children that find squatting much more comfortable and enjoyable than sitting. I have seen an old Chinese man squat on a chair in a train station.. I have tried it a countless number of times and end up falling over or getting stuck...

Zaijian!!

Next stop: SHANGHAI!!

I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called but it tastes a little bit like sunflower seeds once you pull out each bit. It's the seeds from the lotus flower plant before they become the flower. They're everywhere in China!
