Beautiful Day around high 20’s and sunny and clear.
Late start to the morning and first job was to pack our suitcases and get ready to go to he Passenger Cruise Ship Terminal. We hailed two Taxis from 49th Street and Kerry and Elise jump in the first one. As I’m in the 2nd one with Luke I say those famous words to the driver “follow that cab !” He does for a while but both taxi’s got stuck on W 55th Street with a crane blocking the street so our driver yells out to the other Taxi Driver that Kerry and Elise were in “We need to go down one block across”. The other driver nods in agreement and next our driver puts the car in reverse and he reverses back into Broadway, nearly runs over some pedestrian who has a whinge and but the driver yells back in true New Yorker style “get outta here !”.
The detour took us past the Theatre where they film the David Letterman “Tonight Live” show.
We get to the Ship Terminal around 12 midday and Kerry & Elise were not far behind us. A porter took the luggage and
them reminded me it was courteous to tip (oops !). Carnival Cruises are very organised and we were onboard the ship within 30 minutes of arriving.
Wow the first look inside the ship and it was was magic. Really classy fitout with lots of style. Off to find our rooms which were on starboard side and on Deck 7 right up the front. As we have two cabins this time with no bunk beds happening there seems to be lots and lots of space (as well as 2 bathrooms !). Next it’s lunch time !!! Buffet is open and there is everything to be had on Lido pool deck.
Around 4PM off we go sailing down the Hudson River, saying good bye to Manhattan, and a few minutes later I was worried the ship was going to tip over as everybody and I mean everybody headed to Starboard side to see the Statue Of Liberty as we sailed away from NYC.
After yesterday’s storms the sky was clear and views to die for of the Manhattan skyline.
Because of the laundry stuff up we were keen to get to the launderette and get our washing done.
Problem was our bags were a bit slow and we had to wait.
Did the usual walk around the Ship to try and get lost but the Carnival Miracle was actually a pretty good ship to navigate around. Luke was excited to see a Basketball Court on Sports Deck. The kids teen center looked cool, and our dining room looked pretty swank.
We managed to get the laundry in two loads and headed off for dinner at Bacchus around 7.30PM. We had “any time dining” so can go any time but we had to wait 30 mins for a table. My first observations was that the service was OK but nothing flash, meals were modest in size (not such a bad thing) but good choice on menu.
Being day one I showed discipline with and order of soup for entree and linguini for main. But I failed the bread roll test badly (why do they keep refilling the bread basket ?), and desert I could not choose, so yes I had both the fruit platter and the cheese mix !
We managed to get all the clothes in the dryers and folded etc and packed away.
The kids went to the 15-17 teen centre for meet and greet so we had time to catch the abbreviated opening show in the main showroom. The Cruise Director “Malcolm in the middle” is the same one we had on our first Carnival Cruise from Miami in 2007 and he is fun.
The show had two comedians who did a quick introduction of their work and they were pretty funny. We hit the sack around midnight and waited for the kids to return home which is always a good sign when they are trying to find new friends on board such a big ship.
OMG when they return to tell us their are some 200 kids aged 15-17 onboard !! Tomorrow it’s our first full day a sea.
