Venezuela - hello and goodbye - Venezuela - holla y adios

My first stop on this trip was Caracas in Venezuela. The photograph taken in the city centre (see first photo) is more interesting for what you can see in the background. Like several cities that I had previously visited in South America surrounded by mountains, the poorer dwellings are built right up to the peak of the mountain.

However, the difficulty here was that only Citibank cards work in the cash machines. I could use my cards for hotel bills and excursions, but I was having to use my 'emergency dollars' for food, etc. Venezuela would not have been a problem if I had brought a large amount of dollars with me. For this reason I only stayed just over a week and then flew on to Colombia.

This is not an uncommon problem and I found The Tomb Of The Unknown Non-Citibank Card Carrier (see second photo). So many emaciated travellers have been found dead, still clutching their non-functioning cards that a representative corpse was buried under this specially errected monument.

Mi primera parada en este viaje fue Caracas, en Venezuela. La fotografía tomada en el centro de la ciudad (ver primera foto) es más interesante de lo que se puede ver en el fondo. Al igual que varias ciudades que había visitado con anterioridad en América del Sur, rodeado de montañas, las viviendas más pobres se construyen hasta la cima de la montaña.

Sin embargo, la dificultad aquí es que sólo las tarjetas de Citibank funcionan en los cajeros automáticos. Podría usar mis tarjetas de facturas de hotel y excursiones, pero yo tenía que usar mis dólares de emergencia por la comida, etc. Venezuela no habría sido un problema si yo había traído una gran cantidad de dólares conmigo. Por esta razón, sólo me quedé un poco más de una semana y luego voló a Colombia.

Esto no es un problema poco común y me encontré con 'La tumba del portador desconocido de la tarjeta no de Citibank' (ver segunda foto). Así que muchos viajeros escuálidos han sido halladas muertas, sin soltar sus tarjetas no funcionamiento. De lasque representante de un cadáver fue enterrado bajo el monumento erigido en especial.]

Good to know you got there if only briefly and managed to avoid having your name added to the monument. Have a longer and better time in Venezuela! I look forward to your pictures of Angel Falls!
