Zebra Rock Mine
Today we went to the Zebra Rock Mine. It was heaven. Uncle Glenn use to tease me and say that when I go to mining places like Broken Hill I will find precious rocks and gems all over the ground. Well that just hasn’t been true….. until now!!! This place is amazing. There is this rock here that is red and cream striped and it looks just like zebra skin. This nice bloke called John took us on a tour to the mine. WE could take what we liked. Dad told me not to take too much cause you had to weight it and pay for it. This lovely lady called Ruth showed me how to sand it back and polish it. She made us yummy scones with fresh cream and jam. Lucky for me dad’s on a diet, so I ate his. I can fit one whole scone in my mouth at once. That’s talent. We bought an expensive primordial stone platter. There was only one left cause the Darwin Museum bought the other one. Mum thinks she’s so funny casue she says it’s going straight to the pool room. I don’t get it.
I am very worried because tomorrow we have to smuggle Fred across the boarder. I’ve already told dad that if they don’t let Fred in then I’m not going to W.A. Mum and dad have come up with a plan to smuggle him in. I hope it works!!!
Kunnanurra
YES!! We did it. I had Fred in his special bag tucked in my pillow case. I then pretended to be asleep on it. Mum cryovaced his food so you couldn’t tell what it was and we put our school books in Fred’s box. The man was really nice. He looked in our fridges and cupboards and that was all. I was sooo happy.
We went to lake Argyle. It was really beautiful but too expensive to stay there so we decided to keep going to Kununarra. I forgot to say that just before the boarder is a place called Keep River. It looks really nice. We probably should of stayed a couple of nights but we don’t have any fishing stuff.
Kunuarra is great. It is a lovely little town. They had some markets on. We saw
a kid named Elliot walking a dog. He was talking to everyone and anyone in his way. He has Down Syndrome. I think he is probably about 19. Just he left his dad came up to us to say hi. His name is Al. Al is a local artist. We saw his paintings in the gallery. They are of Boab trees. They were lovely and very expensive. Al and his family live on a sandlewood Farm on the Ord River. AL invited us to see Elliott and him at their farm.
That night we went to the Kununurra Rodeo. It was packed. We sat next to a fog horn who thought he was really funny but he wasn’t. He was a jerk. The bulls were on first. The second ride was the best! He stayed on for the whole 7 seconds. Everyone in the crowd were so excited, especially Jerk boy. (The cowboy was his cousin). We saw Elliot there. Mum was having a heart attack because Elliot was standing too close to the fence when the big bulls came close. People were asking him to sit down but he just ignored them. It was very exciting.
WE saw the girls doing the barrel races. They ride soooo fast. We had a great night.
The next day we went to Wyndam. We went to a look out that has been voted in the top 5 lookouts in the world. 5 Rivers meet the Gulf. It was spectacular. Unfortunately our lunch was not. We went to this pub. I got nuggets that I think were actually fish. This Japanese guy went to the girls toilets. Dad should know how that feels cause he did it twice in Alice Springs. Dad bought 2 more books from a little shop. Mum and I teased him cause we think it will take him 3 years to read the ones he’s already got. We have made a bet about it.
On the way home we found a swimming hole. It was nice. Then it was off to Elliot’s farm.
We had a ball. Elliot is sooooo funny. We arrived he gave us all a cuddle and told us to come in. He got out his motorbike and wanted to take us for a ride. We said maybe latter. He rode it around the yard. He
is a really good rider. Then he got the ride on mower out. He took me for a ride on it. He taught me how to drive it. Then he took james for a ride and taught him too. Then he got the slasher out. It was really big. He took me for a ride and taught me how to drive it. He showed me how to lower the slasher blades. They thumped on the ground and he said Jesus Christ. I thought Dad was going to wet his pants. He even took James for a ride on it. James was really good too. I got really confused when at the end he ask so which one of you has Down Syndrome. Mum, dad and Al were laughing so hard. When we went to leave, Elliot got in our car and wouldn’t get out. Al and his lovely family have just come back from Perth. Al has been battling cancer. He told us how lovely the Town has been. The town fundraised and sent a cheque down to him when he was sick. We didn’t get to meet his wife Sharon cause she was on the Gibb River Bike Race.
We are going to try and look out for her when we do our Gibb trip. Mum gave Al our details and we hope they come and visit us one day.
Gibb River Road
So toady is the big day… WE put our caravan in storage and took off with our tent to do the famous Gibb River Road. Mum was really worried because we have heard how tough it can be. It is 600kms of dirt road through the Kimberlies. Mum told dad that if we break down she was going to take James and I and fly back home in a helicopter. Dad said that is a win win situation.
First stop was Emma Gorge. Boring. We did a boring bush walk up to the top to the most freezing water we have ever felt. Even I thought it was cold. The resort part was really nice. I got a chocolate at the end of it. We kept going to a place called homevalley station. The road was really rough and we had to cross a river called the Pentecoast. Dad wasn’t sure so he let another person cross
first and then we crossed. Volkie made it easy. Homevalley was the best. They had a great playground and I met some friends straight away. I put Fred down the slippery slide. He loved it. Mum and dad finally put up the tent. It took them about 5 hours. Dad told mum that we sought have tried to put it up before we left. We had dinner then an early night. I loved it in the tent. Just as we were about to go to sleep we could hear this man singing karaoke. It was awful. Once he stopped, everyone had a good sleep.
The next day we stopped at the Homevalley Station falls. They were beautiful. We drove to Ellenbrae Station. We had a swim in a muddy water hole. James and I tackled dad. It was soo funny. We had a hot shower. They had a donkey to heat it up. We had a great bon fire. It was freezing cold that night. Fred snuggled up to me.
