Saturday 4th March Bangkok, Thailand

Today we went to all the temples ra ra in bangkok - managed to speed round them all in bout 2 hours... not sure if that's the best way to appreciate them but it did me just fine! luckily we managed to choose the only day the mass rallies against the government weren't happening in the park next to the grand palace!

Wat Phra Kaew - 'the one with the emerald budda that gets dressed up'

Has some amazingly colourful buildings and more gold than i've ever seen in my life! - it was actually sunny and it was just blinding! We took a while to find the emerald budda - its in this big building and is actually only about 30cm big! (or it seemed it! - as it was perched really high on lots of gold)... oh yeah and it was in its winter clothes!

Grand Palace - 'think the king and I'

V colonial looking and nothing too special considering it's supposed to be amazing to go and see... but perhaps I missed something!!

Wat Pho - 'the one with the reclining budda'

The oldest and
Wat Phra Kaew Wat Phra Kaew Wat Phra Kaew

Gold, gold everywhere!
largest temple in Bangkok... Has the reclining budda which would have most probably looked fantastic save for the scaffolding all around it!! - it's 15m high and 46m long and has MASSIVE feet!! - the bottoms of the feet are inlayed with mother of pearl. I'm sure i overheard why they'd done this but i can't remember!! (helpful I know!) - oh just found out! - has the different parts on the feet that link to massage :-)

reclining budda means the budda is going into the final nirvana.

Wat Arun - 'the one across the river'

Named after the Indian God of dawn Aruna. This was actually my favourite - don't know if it was because less tourists could be bothered with the trip across the river, i was getting bored or i actually loved the weird tiles stuck on the spires (praang) which were massive (82m my lonely planet tells me!) and seemed so ordinary from afar... they seemed not to be trying to be something blazingly beautiful and covered in gold and so were actually far prettier.. anyway...!!
