I got to Taxco and it pissed down with rain, very soon and for the next hour I was to discover how difficult it is to get a taxi in Taxco in the rain. NOBODY walks in the rain here, so I stood in the rain for an hour (at least) I stopped checking the time after that, whilst waiting, hoping, preying for a taxi to stop.
In the end I had to do as the Romans were doing and fight people off for a taxi. Soaking wet I got to the hotel and boy oh boy what a treat was in store for me. By now I had the beginnings of a stinking cold, which is in fact still with me; I'm at the thick mucus stage whilst writing this.
The hotel Melendez had two elderly men at the reception, one of whom I had been speaking with earlier (when I was begging him to send me a taxi or something, anything). He told me to get the bus in perfect English to the Zocalo. By the time I was standing in front of him soaking wet, his English had declined but the man was so obviously pleased to be conversing with a wet Moreno girl that we understood each other perfectly.
Things took a real dive when I got to the room, man it stank in all kinds of ways. I later worked out it was the ensuite toilet that gave off the far from gentle aroma. I don't know what was to blame for the decor. No mi gusta was ringing in my ears. All I wanted to do was repack my stuff, get rid of half of it, as if I hadn't packed the kitchen sink I could have got one of combi buses the old man had told me to get. As it happens, my luggage couldn't even fit through the doors.
The next day I would bound out and find the quiet, cheap hotel I had had in-mind and check out the lay of the town, all before 12noon so I wouldn't charged for another night in ´no mi gusta´ hotel. I did like one thing about the place; there was a lovely puppy-ish dog on the terrace. You dog lovers will know what type he is from the picture, man he was cute and very bored me thinks. That's exactly what I did, found the hotel I originally wanted to stay at but was booked up for my first night in Taxco, the hotel Grande. Then I went on a hike up to the top of the town, I didn't know that's what I was doing but I just kept on going. When I got to the top, after many hola's, some successfully receiving a salutation back, some not and many bemused looks from the local locals, perhaps the poorer ones too, I sat down.
There I called Esther, testing my new cell phone, it works, brilliant. It's great to be have a chat with Es and I'm feeling really happy about being in this sunny, cobbled escalating roaded town. All is well and good. So I start to hike back down and once back at the centre take another road, winding down this time. I take a few snaps, watch people go by watching me and then a friend makes me. It took three attempts, two Mexican guys kept reappearing along to road I was working down. They said hello, I said a brief (I ain’t stopping hello) back twice. By the third time we were at the bottom of the road in front of a café, and after a good 5minutes of persuading Ismael finally gets me to have a soda with him. Ismael’s friend was too shy to stop and talk so he legged it.
Ismael on the other hand was not shy at all, he was totally interested in making another friend and I was going to be it. We discussed (the best we could) our families and that’s about it. It took a pencil, paper and a large dictionary but we managed to do our immediate family trees. One of his grandma’s (who I later met) is 116. Yes 116 years old, she is the oldest person to my knowledge that I have met, and she was busy doing some fine embroidery. Blimey, most people I know over 40 can barely see past their noses let alone do such work unaided.
