1: Shark-Ray alley 24 secs
First time in Belize.

To add to the adventure, (and save on the costs), took a plane to Cancun, and then a couple of buses to Belize.

Regional buses in Mexico are big and comfortable. Buses in Belize, are more of the "chicken bus" type.

I explored all regions of Belize, partly in bus, and partly in rented 4X4. We also took the boat to visit Caye Caulker.

My wife and i, we don't like big hotels and resorts, so we stuck mainly to little places, eating real authentic cuisine. We tried iguana and armadillo in one restaurant. I have to admit, both were good, especially the armadillo that tastes like lean beef.

Country is small, as the population's number, but it is cosmopolitan: english, americans, creoles, chineses, latinos and mennonites.

Highlights:

1- Caye Caulker: small village ambiance with no big hotels. Almost no cars, but many golf carts. Proximity of the barrier reef. We did a snorkel trip in shark-ray alley to swim with dozens of nurse sharks and sting rays: SUPER!!!!!

2- Cockscomb park: park created to protect the jaguar habitat. We slept in a cabin within the park. We saw toucans, tarantulas, scorpions, foxes, birds... but no jaguars. Maybe next time :-)

3- El Pilar archaelogical site: deep in the woods near Guatemala. We were alone all morning to visit.

4- Mountain pine ridge: wandering around in the territory; nice views.

5- BBQ chicken all around in little restaurants.

Belize some years before I was there
Some glitch in cyperspace sent me a message that you had posted this now recently. But it looks like you made the trip, and posted the blog, eight years ago or so. Anyway, I like Belize and wanted to know your feelings and read your story. It brought back some nice memories. Emma visited Caye Caulker several years before we started this blog (some time before 2006). She said it was a very laid back place then careting only for backpackers. When I was there in 2015 it felt like they were in the process of trying to attract more group travellers and those who used to be backpackers and like that kind of travelling but are a bit older and can afford decent hotel rooms now. How was your feeling in 2012? /Ake

Caye Caulker
Hi Ake, Caye Caulker was still laid back, and much more relax than San Pedro for instance. No cars, but only golfcarts and bikes. We stayed in a very recent little hotel, that was really clean, close to the beach and not that expensive. Apart from Cockscomb jaguar reserve, it was my highlight during that trip. :-)
