Wierzynek 1364
This is the name of the oldest restaurant in Krakow. It's a really nice looking place on the main square and I would say that the prices are not extremely highend for Poland but rather mid-range Bay Area eating out prices.
Here is where the students who had signed up with PROLOG got their free "welcome dinner".
Mother and I went there last night for dinner, just to see what it's like, and to be able to say, hey we ate at the oldest restaurant in Krakow! :-p
1364 is supposedly the year when it first began. They have a website, if you google it, you can see the history lesson they dish out for yourself.
I ordered what amounted to a cream of mushroom soup, and a Polish style (prepared) pike.
Mother ordered trout.
Thumbs up for the cream of mushroom soup, very yummy.
But I really don't have much to say for the fish dishes. On each of our plates we had our slab of fish and probably the equivalent of 1.5 russet potatoes and a few sad looking pieces of steamed veggies. My fish had a few
almond flakes stuck on the skin which contributed no flavor and only minimal texture, and the fish tasted salty and a bit fishy, but that was it. Mother complained that she had what seemed like a whole plate of potatoes...
All in all, I've had better, and I'm sure mother has had better.
And the service... I think I expected a lot better from this place, especially since their website boasts quite a list of world leaders and dignitaries as past customers -- presidents and prime ministers and such.
We were standing and waiting to be seated and the waitresses passed us several times without stopping to help, and we finally had to intercept a waiter to be given a table. Then a decent wait for the bread, silverware, etc. Then I ordered water, the waitress asked if I wanted sparkling or still, I said still, and she never brought any.
Then a long wait for the plates to be taken away, a long wait for her to come back to ask if we needed anything else, a long wait for the bill, a long wait for her to come and fetch the bill.
When
she saw that it was a credit card, she went away again to get the machine, another 5 minutes pass, and then she comes back with a portable thingie, slides my card, gives me the slip to sign, stands right next to me while I am trying to figure out how much tip to leave for a 126 zl meal, totally stresses me out and we all know that I can't do math under pressure, and I quickly write down a number so she will take the slip and go away and I accidentally put down for the total including tip -- 130 zl.
Mother saw me do that. Oops.
Alright, even though I didn't particularly enjoy that dining experience, I didn't mean to be a cheap ass and leave only a 4 zl tip for a 126 zl meal. Really, that's a 3% tip (or is that .3% tip? Like I said, not good with math).
If the waitress hadn't been hovering, she would've netted a lot more than what my bad math came up with while under pressure, so I consider it all her own fault. :-/
Anyway, a bid to waiters and waitresses
Evening Stroll
After our expensive meal. everywhere:
Looking over my shoulder when I am trying to calculate the tip is NOT a good idea!
