Once we arrived at the train stop in Nong Khai we were met by a
tuk tuk driver who took us to the border to get our departure stamp on our visas. Instead of taking us directly to the border, he first attempted to sell us visas at a travel agency at which point everyone on the tuk tuk insisted he take us to the border. The reason they do this, is to make more money from unassuming tourists.
Once at the border, there was a bus that took us to get our Laos visas. Once we had our Laos visas in hand, we found a taxi driver to take us to Vientiane. It was very hot and our driver kept trying to get his A/C working in his car to no avail. We wanted to roll our windows down but did not want to disrespect the driver so we kept them up while roasting in the sweltering heat of the car. The whole way to Vientiane (about a 20-30 min drive), our driver kept nodding off and swerving into the opposite lane of oncoming traffic. It created an odd mixture between excitement and fear. Alas, we made it to
our guest house in the heart of Vientiane safe and sound. The following photos show us exploring the capitol of Laos, Vientiane on foot.
