Wow, what a beautiful morning! Jake and I had the first group of Medal Bearers leaving from Sidney. Really fun and lively bunch! After parting from our MB's we headed to Rita MacNeil's Tea House. She was there and actually cleaning tables! If anyone has seen the Trailer Park Boys episode with Rita you would see the humor in that! We had our picture taken with her. Jake sang to her and she cried. Jake can sing well, so it was an emotional cry! When the medal arrived we had the pleasure to hear her sing. She still has a very beautiful voice. We left and headed onto St. Peter's. Not only is this town beautiful, but we got such a warm welcome it was incredible. The town fed us all a fresh lobster and t-bone steak dinner. The next morning, the hotel fed us a gourmet breakfast of fresh blueberries, crepes, smoked mackerall and lots of other goodies. After that we headed over to the nursing home and they fed us another breakfast! After that we waddled on over to the elementary school for opening celebrations. Their choir of little children sang "You can do anything" for us. Tears and
goosebumps!
After this we headed to Port Hawksbury. We had our end of day celebration here.
Day 21. Started the day with Kyle (host) and another great bunch of MB's at the highschool. These school celebrations are working well for us. The kids really get into it! Later we moved on to Antigonish. What a quaint town. Our MB's from here were a lively bunch! We finished end of day at the university. The students were thrilled. We have never had so many doing the "Firework Dance"!
Day 22 Kyle and I headed to a tiny little town called Moser River. Not very much here! Our meeting with our 4 MB's went well. The whole elementary school came out to cheer on a MB from the school. The school is K to grade 5. There were 16 students and the teacher! After leaving Moser River we headed towards Halifax. Stopped in Sheet Harbour for a late lunch. Hank and half of the crew stayed in Sheet Harbour for the night and the rest of us carried onto Halifax. Apparently we got the better deal in Halifax. Hank and Pat's room was a little on the small and stinky side!
Day
23 the relay went from Sheet Harbour to Cole Harbour. Rick joined us here. We also had the Leuitenant General of Nova Scotia with us.
Day 24 I drove Command and Hank was up ahead of me driving Pace. This was our busiest day yet. All went well. That evening we all went out for a tour of Alexander Keiths Brewery. Had a great time with the crew!
Day 25 was an event day in Halifax. Hank and I and 6 others were chosen to cook dinner for the families at the Ronald MacDonald House. What an incredible experience! Rick joined us and so did Ronald! The children and their families were thrilled! We made them a taco dinner. Six guys cooking in the kithchen together was a hit! Linda the director of the house and her volunteers were great. I don't know how they do this on a day to day basis. There are a lot of happy endings, but there are also some heart wrenching stories. I met a couple and their little boy Daniel. He is 15 months old and they just found out a week ago that he has cancer. They have 4 older children. They
did get a chance to talk with Rick and I am sure he gave them a sense of hope.
The following is an email sent into the Rick Hansen Foundation from one of our Medal Bearers. I guess we are also difference makers!--------------------------------------------------------------------
I just want to say it was awesome to speak to you in Cole Harbour (and shake your hand three times, yeah I counted)! I enjoyed participating in the relay September 14th in Moser River. The experience is one that I will not soon forget. I did forget to mention while speaking with you ....how much I love your Relay Team, every person on your team, they are all amazing... Nathalie, Kelly, Wendy, Kyle, Nick, Sonny+Chair(that's awesome),Russ, Otto, Justan, Jane. I know there are more, many more. There are some that I can't remember their names right now but their smiles I will never forget! You picked the best when you picked them! It was a pleasure to meet and work with them. I would like to wish you all a safe and wonderful journey! I can't believe I was a part of this epic event. The fact that my little girl (Lily) could be there with
me through it all, makes it that much more special. Many Thanks! Sending Much Love and Respect, Jody & Lily xo
