India Itinerary 2011

This is India! the land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of a hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition, whose yesterdays bear date with the mouldering antiquities of the rest of the nations--the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for alien persons, for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free, the one land that all men desire to see, and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for all the shows of all the rest of the globe combined. - Mark Twain (1896)

It's our last night in San Francisco. Tomorrow morning we begin to travel towards Mumbai, our first stop on the Indian subcontinent. I'd like to say that we're packed, and in bed, and that in mere moments we'll be drifting off to sleep. We're almost there. Really.

I've planned a fair number of trips in my life and I have to say that this has been one of, if not the most, difficult. I'd like to thank everyone who's helped so far with advice and an open ear to the issues I've had preparing for this journey. I really appreciate all the support and well wishes, along with the glasses of wine that accompanied very serious conversations about where to go and what to do, and what we could miss this time around. You know who you are!

I'll be trying to post from every location but that might not always be possible. I'll often be writing when I'm tired, like tonight, or be trying to squeeze out a few words before we catch a late train, where we'll be sleeping seven nights out of the next twenty-one. I won't be creating any travel literature here, but I do hope to share a few of our more interesting experiences, including some of the fabulous scenery.

Allow me to give you a glimpse of some of the wonders that India has to offer, and refresh the memories of those who have seen them already. Feel free to add your own comments, and enjoy!
