Noodle on the go
Some things have to be done I was looking forward to Portland and we had a bed tonight instead of camping – yippee! We cooked our usual lunch of noodles by the side of a busy road; like 2 waifs and strays and then went to explore a bit of the city; we went to Powell’s bookstore which is apparently the world’s largest independent bookstore, where we sat and read awhile; it was really cool in there (Bry you would love it!). We looked in a couple of shops before returning to the car to head to the Rose Gardens; we ate tea in the park and then looked around the Rose Garden which was lovely; so many roses and we had a nosy at a wedding going on in there.
Then it was time to head to Devidas the couch surfer’s house; he lived on a lovely estate in a big house and Dim and I were very aware of our smelly camper look! We didn’t need to be though as Devidas made us feel very welcome and although we had already eaten we couldn’t resist trying his beautiful curry. We sat around the table chatting all night with another couch surfer Scott from New Mexico;
a very pleasant evening. The next day we finished off exploring Portland; we looked more around the city and went to a farmers market and treated ourselves to lunch out for once and then headed back to Devidas’ house where he taught Dim how to make curry and me Paratha’s and Kurdi. It was another lovely meal and good conversation and we were joined by Bobby briefly (another couchsurfer) who was also a great guy; An EXCELLENT couch surfing experience, thanks Devidas!
Then we made tracks to Seattle, we had a look around a Norwegian area called Ballard and had a beer (it was Friday after all!) we had arranged another couchsurf with Kaifu from Hong Kong but we were tired out so didn’t do much that evening. We woke early the next day set out to explore Seattle as much as we could in 1 day! 1st stop was the Famous Market which was excellent; food and craft stalls and the famous flying fish stall where each time a customer asks for a fish the workers all break into chants and start throwing fish around! We wanted to go and have a coffee at the 1st Starbucks café
Biggest Independent Bookstore...
in the WORLD!! it took up a whole block and we spent several hours in here. but it was more like a museum and busy so we went to another instead; just the same!! We went to the Art Gallery which was really good; a real mixture of art some that we couldn’t understand but most we could.
We decided to eat our dinner in the Sculpture Park and the sun came out briefly; we walked through the park and we thought it was pretty interesting as sculptures go. Next stop was the Space Needle; we weren’t bothered to go up, good to see but in our opinion nothing too special. That concluded our day in Seattle, all that was left to do was make our way back to Kaifu’s which ended up being a nightmare as we got lost; we found it in the end and it was nice to spend some time chatting with Kaifu before heading to Vancouver; that’s right we decided to go to Canada; well it would be rude not to since it is so close!!!
Watch this space.. Canada & The Barcomb's and Glacier National Park to come very soon - it's hard keeping up when your'e on the road all the time!!!
