After a long, much needed 14 hour sleep we went out for lunch at a café in Natawi, prices are so cheap- it was about 60p for our meal! We then looked around a market with lots of dead chickens, plucked but with their heads still on, and a lot of fish which smelt really bad, and some were still wriggling around, we took some photos of the market that you can see!

After picking up Jess’s aunt’s sister pom we went back to their parents house and had some exotic fruit called “delicious” in thai. We then took a motorbike trip to Rob’s rubber plantation with JJ- Jess’s little cousin, pom and rob (don’t worry mothers, wasn’t us driving!), which was quite an adrenaline rush – we’ve seen four people, even toddlers standing up on these bikes! Rob’s rubber plantation was bigger than we expected, with 40 plots of land, going all the way up a mountain, which we struggled to climb at least half way up! (Honestly, it was such a work out) The rubber industry is also one of the main sources of income for Hat Yai, so it was sad to see some of the trees destroyed from a landslide as a result of the floods.

In the evening we went to a party, celebrating someone becoming a monk- this is a rite of passage in Thailand, he is going to be a monk for 3 months, and cannot drink alcohol during this time. It was odd to see them celebrating with a tv showing scantily dressed Thai girls thrusting to some songs, very different to how the western world might celebrate on a religious occasion! There was also Kareoke, and some tasty delicacies, everyone seems fascinated by the white “phelangs” thai for foreigners, they all stare and smile at us, one woman even asked for a photo with us because it is so rare to see white people in the village, it’s not really a place that tourists visit.

JJ and Clara were excited to receive the dressing up costumes from aunty Fiona, the policeman’s outfit seemed an instant favourite and was the first one the children tried on, and Clara also loved the two in one dress because she’d never seen that kind of design before.

We’re going to up a little earlier tomorrow than today- we didn’t get up until after 12! Paeng is going to teach us how to cook some genuine Thai meals for lunch, and we may go canoeing.

Lots of love,

Hollie and Jess
