For the weekend, we went to the island of Aegina. This island is so close to Athens, it is considered by some to be a suburb of Athens, especially with the hydro-foils making the ferry ride super-quick. Even though it may be a suburb, this island was beautiful in that it provided all of us a couple days of rest and relaxation to move about at our own pace. Swimming at our own pace was enjoyable, eating at our own pace was enjoyable, and having the time to pursue our own interests was enjoyable.
The ferry ride over to the island took about 90 minutes and then we all checked into our hotel. We visited an archeological site first, and then we had lunch. After lunch, it didn’t take long before most of us were swimming in the Aegean Sea. The water’s edge was very rocky and rough for my sensitive feet, but once I got out far enough; the sea’s floor was sandy. The water was calm and crystal clear. It was the most beautiful saltwater swimming experience I’ve ever had. (But I’m not that experienced either.) The rest of the evening was ours and it was nice to

The next day, a small group of us wanted to visit Perdika, a small fishing village on the other side of the island. We took a bus ride and soon we were strolling along checking out the quaint shops and restaurants. Not far out into the Aegean Sea, there was another small island of Milo, which we heard had sandy beaches and a small place to eat. It was too inviting for us to not check it out. So, after a short boat ride over, we found ourselves eating lunch on the small island of Milo. It was nice.
That evening, we met with two local teachers who were able to give us their perspectives on what teaching is like on the island. This too was very informative.
The next day we left Aegina behind as we made our way back to Athens. Now, we are getting ready to say good-bye to Greece, because tomorrow we will be flying to Turkey. Everyone in the group is real excited about Turkey. I’m a tad-bit nervous. We’ll see. I’m sure I’ll be leaving Turkey with a strong
desire to return, but right now it is just the unknown that makes me a little nervous. But then again, it is the unknown that will allow growth to occur.
