Night 2 sailing on the Cat
12 June-15th June

Caught train to Ancona via Prato Centrale and Bologna, then the overnight ferry to Split. Had a really lovely breakfast before shopping for the boat and sailing out of the marina. Winds were fresh gusting to 22 knots. With full sail up we made around 10-11 knots and the boat (Lagoon 38 cat) sailed beautifully. We moored at a beautiful village called Stomorska on the Island of Solta. This was my first attempt at “Mediterranean mooring” which involves reversing into the dock without hitting boats either side , tying the stern lines while picking up lazy lines which are submerged lines that you grab from the dock and are attached to mooring lines (also submerged) which attach to the sea floor about 15 metres out from the dock. Someone grabs the lazy line and walks it along to the front of the boat and ties it to each side of the bow. This maximises the number of boats that can use the limited pier space and provides 4 points of attachment. My first effort was made more fun by the fact that we had 20 knot winds. With an engine in each hull tho, cats are very

Our (over night) Ferry from Ancona to Split in Croatia
manoeuvrable making it all a little less stressful. How I’ll go on the much larger Lagoon 44 next week???? We’ll see. Spent a pleasant night there and set off next day in more moderate winds to a small Island group called the Pakleni Islands to the SW of Hvar. We stayed in a deserted cove on Sv Klement Island anchored in a secluded bay.

From there we made our way further SW to the Island of Vis where we spent the night in one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever stayed on a boat in. At the time, we were planning to go to where we are moored as I write this now (Komiza) but the light was fading and the weather was suspect (we had heard reports of rain and strong winds) so ducked into this little bay. As it was only a narrow bay, we threw out the anchor and tied a stern line to the rocks to keep us from swinging around if the winds turned feral. We had a superb night there and it remained calm. We awoke to brilliant sunshine and gentle breezes so made our way 6 nautical miles toward this town

of Komiza on Vis (where I’m updating this now).

I think this is one place I could run away to if the world became to much to bear. The place is relaxed, friendly, laid back and in a setting that is oh so good. At present we are only 80 miles from the coast of Italy so tomorrow we need to head back toward the coast of Croatia. We need to be back in our Marina Friday night and we’ll pick up to larger cats for the following 7 days with all the mob joining us!!!

This place really is sailing Mecca. I’m amazed at the depth of the water. We can be a couple of boat lengths off the shore and the sounder shows 90 metres depth. Makes anchorages “interesting”. Tides are around 0.4 metre range so makes a nice change to Darwin’s 8 metre variation.
Till next time…
