What a couple of days! I have managed to see more land marks, musuems, columns, military posts, churches and palaces that could be seen in ten lifetimes.
The city has more opulance than Alladins cave and it shows as the people of St Petersburg are very proud of their city and it shows. Every building has been either restored is under restoration or has been lovingly taken care of and nothing in the city has been built higher than Alexanders column, (which I know that means nothing to you), so basically there is no awful high rise buildings and only the real magnificent buildings are seen on the cities skyline.
The city is built on a series of canal and water ways and at 1.30 am all the bridges are drawn up and you could easily get stuck on one of the many islands until they re-open again around 4.30am.

Mercedes and they all drive as if they are in a Jason Bourne movie.
I have not seen a Lada yet! Was this really a communist country? I think they could teach the west a thing or two!
St Petersburg is a real jewel, oh and because we are close to the Artic circle it never gets dark here and there is only a couple of hours of dusk between 12.30am & 3.30am and every day it is like being in the Algarve in high season, oh bliss. So far there is nothing dreary about Russia.
