Ano Syros
Where we walked up yesterday Thursday 9th June 2011
We went out for our evening stroll at 8 o'clock and wandered back to the harbour area.
There was a warehouse outlet on the way that we popped into and bought some new shorts for me.
We worked our way up to the main square and had a drink in a cafe called Quick, sitting watching the kids running all over the place and the traffic doing lots of silly things, some things don't change.
We weren't that hungry and decided on a croissant back at our current favourite cafe Coffeeright and returned to the room at 11 o'clock.
Friday 10 June, 2011
I slept late today and the clock said 1020 when I finally stirred. We had been talking about our next move and had seen that there were ferries to a few places we may want to head to and after a little research decided on Samos, as there appears to be a ferry on Saturday.
So Pat did some searching for hotels and so on and we figured that Samos would be OK.
Some time after 11 am we went and had a morning coffee at
Ermoupolis Harbour
clearing rubbish out of the narbour the Coffeeright. One thing I suppose I haven't mentioned about this place is that the view out of the cafe. It is across the main road running along the waters edge and if there is a ferry in, then the view is straight in to the aft end across the stern ramp and you can see everything that is going on and off the ferry. So an absolutely great spot for being nosey and we aren't the only one's to be doing it of course.
So after that we found a ticket office that showed Visa signs and booked our ferry for tomorrow.
We will be on the Hellenic Seaways vessel, Nissos Mykonos, departing Syros 1540 hours, 11th June and arriving Vathi, Samos at 2150 hours after several other ports on the way. So a six hour passage and we went the extra mile and booked a seat, so €46 each.
The harbour kept our interest for a number of hours as we watched all sorts going on. There was a cruise ship in today called the Royal Iris and we took a closer look at that. Then had a drink while watching the cruise passengers toing and froing. There were also some yachts moving about and that always provides some amusement as they try and tie up to the quayside.
The ferries were coming and going and that also kept our attention.
One thing that we saw that astonished us was a little boat being very industrious around the harbour with a couple of guys and they were plucking the rubbish out of the water with nets. We guess they were employed by the harbour and I have to say I have never seen the like before and thoroughly applaud the action.
We finally wandered back to the room at 1645 hours.
Now we have booked the ferry Pat went ahead with our accommodation arrangements and due to our arrival time we have booked a hotel very close to the port for Saturday night called the Emily and then booked a different location for a further few nights.
Pat has been using booking.com for our room reservations and so far everything has worked a treat, so a definite recommendation.
