We were up super early this morning to get on our Blue Mountains tour. Unfortunately the sun wasn’t cooperating but it wasn’t raining...yet. We walked down the street to the pick up point and hopped on the bus when It arrived. We drove around the area picking up all the other passengers. Our first stop was the Sydney Olympic park where the olympics were held here. We saw the ANZ stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies were held.

Outside the stadium they put up some poles that had the names of all the volunteers who helped out during the olympics on them. I thought that was a really nice way to say thank you to the volunteers. We also saw the olympic torch.

We then made our way out into the Blue Mountains region. We stopped to see if we could find any kangaroos and we lucked out. There was 2 kangaroos and one was the mom with a baby joey in it’s pouch and a young male. The baby joey was so cute and would stick his little head out of the pouch and eat some grass too. So cute! We also saw a kookaburra but it didn’t laugh for us.

Next up we headed into one of the town’s for a lunch stop. Just as we got into town the low clouds had set in and so had the rain. Pretty miserable but we brought our own lunch so we found a spot under a bit of cover and ate our sandwiches. After lunch we headed to the scenic railway area to see the three sisters. Because of the low clouds we all headed down on the worlds steepest railway. It’s actually a bit of a scary ride down as it’s soooooo steep. It’s set at 52 degrees. At one point I felt like I was going to fall out looking straight down!!!

Once at the bottom we hopped off the train. On a clear day what you see from here is the three sisters and the valley below. But....we had heaps of low clouds covering the entire valley. We did luck out when the clouds lifted just enough for us to see the three sisters. Now, where I come from we have the three sisters mountains in the Rockies. The three sisters over here don’t even compare in size! They are 3 little rock formations they’ve called the three sisters. Not quite what i was expecting. We did a little walk around the rainforest area around the valley where there used to be coal mines. You could see where some of the camps would have been and had just been abandoned. It was a neat little boardwalk. We caught the cablecar back up to the top but we weren’t able to see much still because of the low cloud.

There is another cablecar that goes across the valley that had a glass bottom on it. We went on it but sadly we could see nothing but cloud 😞 our bus picked us up on the other side of the valley and continued on our way. We stopped at the King’s Tableland which is a big valley you can overlook into. There are no railways on the cliff so you have to be really careful. We still had lots of low clouds but a bit of it had cleared up for us.

There is a spot where you can sit on the edge of the cliff with your feet hanging off and get your picture taken. Dad and I both did it but mom couldn’t even look when we did it. Pictures turned out really good!!! We then did a little walk down below the cliff where there is a bit of a cave. Our tour guide told us the story about this cave. A former nazi guy who had run from Germany build this cave. He stole heaps of concrete and things to build it. THere was a doorway and windows and he even had a bathtub!

He lived there for several years until someone discovered it and he abandoned it and hasn’t been seen since. No trace of him! What a crazy story!!!! We then stopped at an aboriginal rock carving. It was in the shape of a kangaroo. The tail of the kangaroo points to the direction they came from and the nose points in the direction they continued on. It was really interesting to hear about how they used these rock carvings to navigate around Australia.

Our final stop was to get on a boat cruise down to the harbour. There were points where it was just bucketing down. So it wasn’t the most amazing cruise but it was still fun. As we got into Circular quay you could see flying foxes (bats) up in the sky circling around. That was pretty cool.
