Torres Del Paine
enroute to the Towers I think one of our fellow Fantastico Sur customers has gone mental on Tomato Fettucine and made a break for the main hotel restaurant. This morning we found a table barricade between us and the hotel breakfast buffet area. Refugio customers dining with high yielding Hosteria customers is clearly a very undesirable scenario.
Today we took on the demanding hike to the Mirrador (or viewpoint) Las Torres. The Torres (or Towers) of Paine stand at 3400m and were first climbed by Chris Bonington in 1963. The weather today has been overcast with several short showers which somewhat diminished the views on the approach. It took 4 hours to reach Campamento Torres which sits at the base of a very steep bolder strewn slope to the Mirrador. Marco then surged ahead leaving me trailing way behind. Jon pretty much stayed with me mainly to ensure I refrained from breaking a leg I think. The visibility was diminishing all the way and as we both reached the viewpoint we were greeted by a wall of cloud. Marco gave us the wonderful news that he had made it up top in the nick of time and had enjoyed the last moments of the
At Campamento Torres
The climb to the towers over the bolders seen top left spectacular view of the 3 sheer granite towers rising majestically above the glacial lake below. As you will see below the kind people from the Torres Del Paine National Park have planted a sketch of the view for exactly these circustances so that nobody misses out. Sufficient compensation it was not. Never mind, at least we got there..
By the time we returned to Hotel Torres we had completed 20km of difficult terrain. 2 bottles of Chilean were sunk over dinner, well earnt today.
