so proud of Lagos's newest First aiders

it is lunchtime here in Lagos and it is incredibly humid, there are so many power cuts on a daily basis no one even notices them anymore, they just carry on regardless. Horns are beeping and people are walking up and down the street with their shopping on their heads.

this morning I came in and listened to the Health and Safety briefing, it was short so I came away to set up for the first aid assessments, I later discovered that they were short for a reason, it was so that Jane and I could be introduced along with all of the Safety committee.... ooops. I have since given my apologies.

when I arrived to set up two of the first aiders were already here, they were in full practice, I was really proud to see them revising, they made notes on the board and were bandaging each other up, I was pleased.

two guys from our service department were my casualties for this morning so I trained them in how to be a good casualty and they really enjoyed taking part in the exams, they informed me that they have learnt alot about first aid and have expressed an interest in taking part in a course next time.

one at a time I called the guys through, they were to deal with a bleeding casualty, an unconcious breathing casualty and a non breathing casualty, they all did very well and they all passed - my favourite bits was when a couple of them jumped and cheered with joy when I told them they had passed. Each of them completed an evaluation form. My favourite comment being "the classroom felt like a family house, everyone felt free" I feel so happy that I have made the trainees feel comfortable when learning about first aid.

Jane and I will be heading to the airport at 7.30 this evening for a night flight back to the UK, its only 6 hours so I will be looking forward to climbing into bed.

The people of Nigeria have been very hospitable and I have enjoyed being in their company, I have eaten more food in a week than I would probably eat in a month!

I have seen the poverty and the riches, experienced the happiness of the people, been badgered by the police for money and I have been made to feel welcome - I have enjoyed Nigeria
