Naples, Italy and the Isle of Capri…I love Limoncello

Last night, we sailed past Stromboli(volcano #2) around midnight. The captain said he would slow down around 12 midnight so we could view the eruption. I go to bed early; but I really wanted to see the volcano. I stayed up painfully till 11:15, and went up on the front deck in the dark to better see the show. I saw the large dark cone of the volcano and assumed it was dormant as I saw no flame, no orange, no fire, nada. I returned to my room at 11:30, OUT LIKE A LIGHT AT 11:31. At 11:45 it started spouting lava and continued for a while, the captain had time to circle the mound for the port passengers to get a good view, turn the ship and give the other side a good show- and I missed it, only saw pictures and pirated a video from a friend, c’est la vie!

We had been to Naples last fall and opted to do the combined Pompei and Amalfi drive tour. Amalfi was wonderful and Pompei (volcano #3)was a must. This time, we had planned Capri and city tour of Naples. When I asked our well traveled friends if Capri and the Blue Grotto should be visited, they said do not miss it. So… off we went on our own. We walked 2oo metres from our ship to the Capri ferry dock, we bought our tickets and joined a tour of our ship mates who had boarded a bus for the distance and were being ushered to Capri but not the grotto. We did good! We saw more and paid 1/10 the $. So let’s see: Prinsendam, hydrofoil ferry, motor boat and finally rowboat into the cavern and return, same transfers. It was all worth it, the blue grotto was scary and fabulious.
Back in Capri, we rode a funicular up the mountain instead of hopping a bus and suffering more switchbacks, bought a bottle of Limoncello and 2 sandwiches, sat on a park bench overlooking sea and gardens and giggled while picnicking. Fantastique!

Claire We'll share some Limoncello when you visit Elliot Lake this summer. I have a wonderful desert recipe that uses that amazing treat. So glad to be able to live vicariously through you as you travel. Sue
