Picture Perfect
Encapsulates what Venice is all about Venice must be seen to be believed. It is simply remarkable knowing you are visiting a city that is slowly sinking and may not be there in a 100 years. Whether it was trying to negotiate the city’s labyrinth of canals and street side waterways, playing with pigeons in the square of St.Marco, or necking a bottle of red as the sun set on the distant horizon - Venice would provide the perfect setting for our final Italian furlong...
Highs
1. In what is one of the most expensive cities in the world, finding pizza for Euro 1.80 - was enough to keep us pretty chuffed.
2. Having many a snap-happy tourist take to Azz’s pigeon performance. When a combined total of thirty pigeons flocked to the bag of seed we covered him in. Azz was asleep at the time.
3. Exploiting the “honest system” on the Venice bus system. I doubt whether the transit police catered for the fact that our 14 day trek through Italy was quickly coming to an end - and with our budget already blown "optional" tickets weren’t a high priority.
4. Chilling with bottles of red wine and a sunset to
Ahhh Venice
On the wharf die for - the romance of Venice - perhaps lost a little when shared with Jonesdog and Azza.
Lows
1. Not seeing one set of Venetian blinds while we were there (well, Jonesy did raise a valid point)
2. The sheer randomness of waking up in an outdoor display tent (similar to what you’d find at Rays Tent City), and what’s worst, on this morning being woken by the pitter patter of shoppers perusing these display tents for camping gear. Yep, the business had opened for trade and I had slept in their shop. Needless to say it proceeded one of the biggests night in the country.
3. Our last minute ticket check revealed that rather than jetting out of the airport we were at, we were in fact leaving from an airport an hour away. Azz, who was not with us, and who always has his phone off was uncontactable, and could have potentially missed is flight. A bus trip to get him, and then a shuttle service to the airport saw us just make our fight. It didnt surprise us that Azz lost little sleep over the incident.
