Once again, Chuck and I decided and are fortunate enough to skip, at least part of, winter.

We arrived to Lima, Peru the night of January 3rd. We spent a few days in Miraflores making travel arrangements for the coming month and visiting the local shops, markets, parks, and restaurants.

Friday the 7th of January we went to stay the weekend with our Peruvian family, the Cuba’s, in Villa Maria del Triunfo. We made macaroni and cheese and hotdogs for dinner and handed out presents sent by Angela and Miguel.

The next morning I went with Miguel’s mother, niece and neighbor to attend a session of yoga on the beach. Yoga started with walking from one end of the beach to another five times, then doing a series of arm circles and leg lifts, and ending with a sort of inspirational circle. Although, this is entirely different from any other yoga session I have ever attended, it was very nice to be barefoot on the beach in January with new and wonderfully welcoming family and friends.

Once back to the Cuba home we went to the local market to get food for lunch and dinner. Here, like in many other places, you buy your food fresh and as you need it rather than prepackaged and in bulk. While with the Cuba family we were treated to some of Angela and Miguel’s favorite dishes; papas de huancaina (potatoes with sauce made from the local pepper), rice with beans and chicken, lomo saltado (beef loin with tomatoes, onions, and potatoes), and chaufa (Peruvian Chinese fried rice).

After lunch I went with Miguel’s mother and two of his nieces to the cemetery. I was told it is the largest cemetery in South America and I would say it may well be the largest in the world. It was truly dumbfounding.

On Sunday we went to Punta Negra, a beach just south of Lima, with the family. We rented a row of chairs and umbrellas, walked along the beach, watched the kids play in the water and sand, and shared two heaping plates of ceviche. It was an absolutely wonderful day.

We are looking forward to spending one more weekend with the family at the end of our trip before returning to the cold Wisconsin winter.

Sunday evening we traveled overnight by bus north to Huaraz; details to come, until then – Cheers!

amazing!
Truly amazing to see this, I'm glad you got a photo. Do the families build these burial plots themselves?
