A beautiful, idyllic landscape garden, set in a sweeping valley overlooking Bath, was created by Ralph Allen, who was the local entrepreneur, with advice from Capability Brown and the poet Alexander Pope in the 18th century.
It is accessible by the No.2 bus from Dorchester Road in front of Bath Spa Station, and the bus will take you the main entrance of Prior Park Landscape Garden on the Ralph Allen Drive.
The garden was the state of neglect in the 1908s. The National Trust had repaired the precious Palladian Bridge and renovated the footpaths and ponds as well as restoring ornaments and parkland. The garden has been opened to the public since 1993. The Car Park has not been built to reduce the volume of the traffic around Prior Park Landscape Garden and to promote the local environment.
After leaving the entrance building, you will find the board “Departure” on the right hand, which is starting point of a six-mile circular walk. The gravel path leads you to the woodland, the pond and the viewpoint to the sham bridge. Then, the woodland trail takes you to the summit where you can overlook the valley garden and the skyline
of Bath.
From the summit, take the footpath on the right hand and go through the woodland. The six-mile circular walk takes you to the tranquil woodland and meadows, an Iron Age Hill fort, Roman Settlements, 18th century follies, and viewpoints. Whilst following the downhill route, you will see the Serpentine Lake, Cascade and Gothic Temple in the Wilderness, which were reinstated during the restoration project between 2006 and 2007.
At the foot of the garden, you will see the Palladian Bridge, meadows, ponds and woodland and Prior Park College on the back of the summit.
The Palladian Bridge was built in 1755 and has been renovated by the National Trust recently. There are only four original Palladian Bridges remaining in the world. This is one of them. The precious bridge has been registered as a Grade I listed building. The recent reinforcement has allowed visitors to cross over the bridge.
