Wow! I can't believe I finally made it! After I breazed through customs, the fabulous Lis was waiting outside to pick me up. We made a stop at her work where they do online training courses to speak english with an American accent. They were in need of a female primary english speaker for one of the courses so I volonteered!!! It was fun. After that went back to the house and I napped for a bit while Lis went back to work. After making some yummy soup with arroz y chipilin ( a leafy herb), we went to hang out with some of her friends in Zona 1, none of whom spoke any english! I had so much fun. We drank some beers and had a bit of 420 vibe goining as well. After a few beers Lis said I was speaking much better spanish! LOL! I least they mostly understood me, not bad for only being here a few hours! We walking around town but it was pretty deserted except for the transvestite prostitutes. Yes thats right, I said "transvestite prostitutes"!!! Not just one, but a few on each corner! They don't tell you about that in any of the guide books!!! Not comfortable in my spanish yet to talk to them but Lis says they are very nice and she has often chatted and shared a smoke with them. We walked to the Palacio Nacional (National Palace) where we continued to drink cervezas. When we got back to the house, "The Neverending Story" was on TV. Having seen the movie so many times, it was awesome to watch in spanish without any english subtitles. Cant think of a better way to spend my first night in Guatemala!

Later today we are going to drive to Antigua, more on that on my next post!

Very cool, Rachel! You have dived in. Big props on being able to communicate w transvestite prostitutes (digame que estan las palabras correcto de politico cuando aprendes). My spanish remains.... horible. Here, it snowed 15" and is starting to snow again. I am helping a friend clean today (ugh). First, I will shovel lots of snow so I can simply leave my house. But midweek next week, voy esquiar! Have fun!
