Edit Blog Post
Welcome to LA peoples!! But, this is about our last few days in Lima, Peru, South America, more to come from LA in another blog, for now, lets try and get up to date!!
So, we did write this blog 2 days ago, sitting in the airport in Lima, but the internet cut out without being able to save it, so here goes....
We left you as we arrived in Lima, and because we had left our tour leaders, we were a little unsure about what to do when we got to Lima. We were just hoping to find the little guy with "Tucan Travel" on a sign in the airport. Luckily for us, that was easier than we thought!! 😊 Our group of about 14 jumped into the waiting mini-vans, and then somehow survived the next 45mins of traffic driving in Lima, the capital of Peru. We were always cm's away from other cars, motorbikes and tuk-tuks, and even saw our counterparts in the other mini-van bumper-nudge a few cars (that's what they're there for!!). We were all glad to get out at the end, check-in and get into our rooms for a nice hot shower!!
We had a few
things to do, so instead of the shower, went for a wee-walk around town, dumping off our laundry, and then finding the Post Office to find out if we could send some stuff back home to get more room and less weight in our bags!! The price sounded good, so after heading back to our room and picking up some stuff, we ended up sending back 8kg!! worth of stuff to home (Sean and Jess, can you keep an eye out for it please??). By then, it was definitly time for a shower, as we were going out to dinner with the group to say goodbye to Sam and Greg, the first to go.
Dinner was more eventful than planned, as most people decided to have a strong Pisco Sour drink from the bar, then proceed to ask some of the boistrous locals where a good place to eat was (we already were going to go somewhere). They then proceeded to, very loudly and drunkenly, take us around the streets to a 'really good place for food and drink.' This place ended up being the Sports Bar, not really what we had in mind. We all decided to go back
to our original idea to have dinner at a local restuarant run by nuns, where the profits go towards the poorer people in Lima. Unfortunately for one of our group, Rob, he was trying to read a map while walking, and fell into one of the holes in the road that they leave open for unsuspecting people. A bit of blood later, we did make it to the nunery (a new word for Jess), and had a great meal, this time speaking French to the nun's. Another big reason why we went there was to sing, mainly listen, to the nuns sing "Ave Maria" at 9pm, which was a beautiful and different experience!! After dinner, it was time for bed for us, as we were dead tired after a early start in the Jungle, and ending up in a Concrete Jungle....
Saturday, 14th November, day 43 on the overseas road started, and ended (just) in Lima. It did start late though, as we decided a sleep-in was on the cards. We eventually got ready at 11am, packed and checked out of our room at 12pm, right on time!! We stored our bags, and went for a walk around the town,
enjoying many of the sights. Included in this was seeing the changing of the guards at the Government Palace at Plaza de Armas, visiting San Francisco Church and the Catacombs that lie underneath them with over 20,000 bodies!!, visiting Plaza Peru for a photo with the fountain, seeing the Cathedral, the Archiepiscopal Palace, vising Plaza San Martin and eventually ending in a cinema. THe title of the movie was in Spanish, but after a bit of conversing, we thought that there would be English subtitles so decided to give it a shot of watching a movie that Jess wanted to see; for only AUD$2.50 each!! We were pleasantly surprised when we got in and found out it was in English (not dubbed!!) and had Spanish subtitles, so we enjoyed 'Life as we know it' a lot, and Jess probably cried as much as she did in Marley and Me!!
By the time the movie finished, we had killed the afternoon (as planned), so headed out to dinner with the remaining members of the group to a very flash and modern part of Lima, Miraflores. A 20min cab later, we arrived to what looked like Sunshine Coast, next to the water,
lots of shops and restuarants and even big screens of advertising!! It was very nice and different. We were the ones leaving this time, so after quickly eating some Japanese food, we said our goodbyes and headed back to the hotel to pick-up our bags to head to the airport. We made it by 9:30pm, and boarded our flight at 12:45am, bound for Houston, before JUST making our connection to Los Angeles. 1 1/2 hours was really not a lot of time to get through customs, and then check our bags BACK in, and make it through security comfortably. We got very nervous, so after getting through, RAN to our gate, to just make it on our flight!! We think we were 2 of the last 4 to get on!! But fine times!! We did make it to Los Angeles though, so will have to talk about these few days in another blog, as there is A LOT on the cards!! Enjoy this last blog about South America!!
