Ooops, out of order!

I just found some photos of Galle and the Turtle hatchery that I had meant to post before the Bangkok blog. Oh well!

Galle is wonderful atmospheric town with an old fort. It was hit really hard by the tsunami as the sea came in from both sides of the protruding ramparts.

The turtle hatchery was great, they really do an amazing job. They buy the turtle eggs from the villagers at a slightly higher price than they can get for them at the market (it is illegal of course for the villagers to sell them) and then bury them. Once they hatch, they are kept for 3 days then released into the sea at night. This gives them a better chance than they would normally have although the mortality rate is still really high.

They also have a few injured turtles and an albino that would not have a chance of surviving in the wild. There was one turtle with no flippers at all who just sat on the bottom of her pond. She had the company of another turtle, but I did wonder if it wouldn’t have been better if she had just met whatever fate awaited her. Not a happy life I’m sure.

On a happier note the little ones were awesome and I even bought a batik picture of one, just what I needed - not, but I had to buy something.
