On this, our third trip into mainland Mexico, Bob and I will revisit several places in addition to venturing to a few new ones. We’ll fly on Aeromexico out of San Francisco to Mexico City on October 10, 2010 and will spend our first few days in the city getting used to the high altitude and revisiting the most wonderful anthropology museum.
Then we’ll catch a first class bus north. Guanajuato has seen us twice already, but draws us back again for its International Cervantes Festival. This festival features artistic performances and art exhibitions. We don’t really know what to expect, but plan to have a great time.
We don’t know where we’ll go in between, but will start our month-long stay in an apartment in Oaxaca on October 25. Last time we were there, the Swine Flu made its appearance. The Mexican government shut down many places in an attempt to stop its spread. This stay will let us see what we couldn’t on our last trip. Spanish classes and mole cooking classes are probable adventures for us in Oaxaca.
Lastly, we’ll head eastward into Chiapas state to visit the capitol Tuxtla Gutiérrez and then spend some time in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Afterwards, we’ll venture into the lowland jungle to fight the heat and humidity at Palenque. Its ancient Mayan ruins will be a highlight of our trip.
Somehow, but certainly by bus, we’ll end up back in Mexico City for our flight back to San Francisco on December 10.
Join us on our adventure via this blog.
