9.8.10 Ton Sai Beach - A small piece of perfection.

Leaving Lanta was a completely different experience from our arrival. Graeme’s car and knowledge of the local area made sure of that. Boys in tow, we made the swift 2 hour ride back to Krabi/Ao Nang, and boarded a longtail bound for Ton Sai bay. In 2002 this was a self organised affair, however this has been stream lined by the introduction of a boat ticketing system. We made the ride out to the island on a rough see with the boys deadly silent as the boat rocked with the waves soaking everything in it. We rounded the corner of the headland to see Ton Sai. Ton Sai is just as insanely beautiful as we remembered it. Limestone cliffs rising from the sea, jungle meeting the white sandy beach and clear blue water surrounded it. Fearful that our memories of such perfect place would be shattered by a new hotel or 5 star lodge, we were pleasantly surprised to see that nothing has changed at all. The cliffs still held climbers, the jungles still echoed with the Gibbons’ calls and the Freedom and Chillout bars were right where we left them, well almost.

We checked into Ton sai Bungalows only a few metres from the beach and headed for a walk collecting sand dollars (anemone skeletons) by the hundreds.
The planned 2 day outing quickly turned into 10. Liff and I remained on Ton sai to celebrate our 2 yr anniversary while Graeme and the boys headed back to Lanta to check on the construction. Just like in 2002 the days melted into one another. We took long walks through the jungle, spent the evenings bouldering on the beach and watching climbers leak with sweat as they pushed themselves higher and harder. Live music, half price cocktails, and fireshows were our night time entertainment. At sunrise we would watch the monitor lizards sun themselves outside our bungalow and then dig for worms with the resident chickens .Fellow beach bums were friendly and relaxed, and happy to while away the hours chatting with a beer. To celebrate our anniversary we decided to spend a whopping $30 and treat ourselves. So we hired a longtail boat for day to take us to 3 nearby islands to snorkel sunbathe and explore, each got an hour long thai massage, hired a canoe for a morning to explore the nearby sea caves, and had a meal of seafood and freshly caught tuna. Not bad.

We played rummy like demons as each day we were confined to our room by monsoon rainstorms lasting at least an hour, and 10 days of intensive play saw Liff leading with 88 games and 1674 points over my 95 games and 2067 points..... well done me!
Deciding it was time to move on, a tough decision to say the least, we headed back to Ko Lanta to continue with the restaurant preparations......
