This morning I spoke with a friend. She is a woman from a village who spends most of her time in and around Sudder street. I was glad to see she has recovered from a fever.

She sat by me with no agenda- she just wanted to talk (3/4ths Bengali, with some English). She told me that it is difficult to get money from the foreigners if she does not have a child.

There is an agency that brings children in from the villages around Kolkata in the mornings, and returns them at night. The families get about 80 rupees, the Kolkata street women get more money from those who cannot adequately suppress their mammalian tendencies to care for young ones, and the agency gets a cut. The best part- this arrangement is not illegal.

My friend told me how crazy the foreigners are! If the Japanese (she singled this group out) see a baby, they love to play with it and give money to the woman who holds it. However, "if they are baby coming" (if they get pregnant) they are very sad.

"The best part- this arrangement is not illegal. " This is illegal.. But they are able to do it by paying a % to the local police..
