Pingyao was a merchant town during the Ming dynasty and it is where China's first banks developed but the city became strapped for cash in the early twentieth century meaning no money for modernisation. If you can ignore the satellite dishes and mopeds effectively you step back in time when walking through the city gates and this living musuem is reaping the benefits of the tourists that want to see how things were.
We are staying in the most beautiful surroundings - along with the biggest bed I have ever slept in. Just to emphasise the scale I reckon that you could fit 20 people in it if you were that way inclined!
The whole city is surrounded by a large wall 6km long which we have cycled around - it is a thoroughly magical place and a must do for any of you planning a trip to China.
