Vegas, Bryce Canyon, and Grand Canyon

Sigh ... it's time to re-enter the corporate world. But before that happens, I decided it was time for Homyar's first road trip in the U.S... Vegas, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We decided to take 5 days to drive more than 1,800 miles through Nevada, Utah, Arizona and back through California. The first day was a grueling 10-hour drive to Vegas. The temperatures of 104 F reminded me of Chennai. For Homyar, the highlight of Vegas was stumbling upon the Lion Habitat at the MGM Hotel. Being just inches away from the lion (separated by a very thick piece of sound-proof, smell-proof glass) was a thrilling experience. The habitat was built at a cost of $9 million to stiffle the lion's sense of smell and hearing. Can you imagine what the sound of all those slot machines would do to the poor lion? We were fortunate to be there when the lion was awake and playing right above us ... literally inches away from it's giant destructive paws.

Our next destination was Bryce Canyon. I'd heard that Bryce Canyon was like no other place on Earth so I had very high expectations. Canyon is misleading since it's not really a canyon ... the rock formations are shaped over millions of years by the extremes of heat and cold, ice and sun. The hoodoos, as these formations are called, are incredibly shaped by ice, wind, and sun. The colors just absolutely stunning ... truly like nothing I've seen. Even the brochure wasn't sure how to describe this place!

The savy readers may be wondering why there aren't any pictures of the Grand Canyon. We decided to tour the North Rim instead of the more popular South Rim. Other tourists we ran into along our trip raved about the North Rim ... and since I hadn't been we took our chances with the unknown. Which rim is better? It really depends on what you're in the mood to do. The North Rim had vast panoramic views of the canyon, but for someone who hasn't seen the South Rim, the effect just wasn't the same. We'll need to make another trip to the South Rim so Homyar can get the full effect and perhaps hike down to the bottom 😊
