Finally got on the road again after the wild winds and pelting rain although we got thoroughly soaked hitching up! We have decided that we will prop any time the weather opposes us. Both wind and rain can make things a little uncomfortable but wind is worse. Time is not our enemy luckily.

What a surprise Nullarbor was to us. We expected barren desert and not much else. Well, surprisingly, we found an undulating green landscape , access to beautiful shorelines and lots of green grass. In Fraser Range we were told that there had more than two inches of rain in the last month! Do yourself a favour if you haven’t been across and make the trip at some stage in your life.

Ceduna

No photos for Ceduna! For us, we needed to see it and it does give very good strip shopping for the essentials. Other than that and a very good ocean front hotel bistro, we were happy to move on.
One redeeming feature is the Oyster Bar just out of town where you can have oysters and a glass of bottled wine or take unshucked for $6.00/doz. Very

good value and very good local oysters.

Nullarbor Road House - Head of the Bite

Who would have thought it! Here we are on the Nullarbor Plains and we find points of interest. Dingoes walking along the road, treeless saltbush plains and whale watching!

We pulled into the road house and had a choice of any gravel site with power but no water. To the back of us was a single golf hole (a par 5) with artificial turf and the airport for tourist joy flights. The golf hole is part of the new Nullarbor Links. 18 holes from Kalgoorlie to Ceduna. No, didn't bring the clubs!

Just 26 klm south is the Head of the Bite tourist venue. At this time the Southern Right Whales are beginning to pass through. We had the good fortune to watch two of them gamboling offshore. The coastline is sensational ranging from snow white dunes to major cliff faces. Very picturesque.

On returning to the road house we were filling with diesel when out of the bush another dingo wandered in. It poked about for a while and then wandered off into the scrub.

Talk about captive

audiences. As we have to go into WA tomorrow, all fruit and veggies have to be surrendered so we ran them down on the basis we would eat at the roadhouse. Yes, sure! $34 for a chicken schnitzel. Oh well, you only do it once!

Eucla

Another interesting day. Just prior to Eucla is Bordertown and the Western Australian border. On board inspection of the van and car took place for fruit and vegetables so they are serious about the border patrol.

The road to Eucla is very close to the Great Australian Bite and along the way there are a number of vantage points to allow you to see the cliffs that frame the ocean. It is a little similar to The Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Once the van was parked up we headed the four klm to the old telegraph office that has been reclaimed by the dunes. It was a beautiful 25 deg and that made the visit most enjoyable. So much so that we decided to walk the extra klm or so to the beach. We had a crystal white beach that ran for miles to ourselves. An experience not often

afforded us.

Caiguna

Well, you can’t win them all. The toughest leg of the journey so far. It was a blustering 40 klm head wind with regular rain squalls. Fortunately the car and van ran steady in it all so we were pleased about that. It was expected at some stage. Not much to recommend at Caiguna. There is a blowhole but we didn’t get to see it because of the weather.

Fraser Range Station

As bad as the run to Caiguna was, the run to Fraser Range was magnificent. Sunny with very little breeze and only 280 klm to cover. At the end of the run came a little paradise in the bush. The bird life is astounding with birdsong all day long. A very relaxing stopover.

We have had two days here doing a lot of walking, catching up on domestics and enjoying a sunset tour of the station. The tour concluded high on a ridge overlooking the setting sun with wine in hand and ‘cheese and bickies’ go with it. It was a bit chilly but nobody cared.

The Nullarbor is behind us now as it is only 100 klm to
