Get Thee to Merry Olde England - May 30, 2010

After years of being brainwashed by watching BBC shows like Doctor Who, Monty Python, You Are What You Eat, and It's Me or the Dog, we are finally going to visit the United Kingdom. I didn’t think we would make it to Europe this year with the economic still difficult, volcanic ash clogging up airplane engines over the Atlantic, and airfares skyrocketing. But after many months of searching, I used the last of my Delta skymiles to score 4 free tickets to London for me and my family.

Most people choose to visit England first because it’s like cultural training wheels if you’ve never been abroad. Everyone speaks English, they have McDonalds and Coca Cola, and the measurements are all in inches, feet, miles and pounds. We’ve traveled to many other countries before so I guess we are circling back to all the places we missed. Besides that, Alyssa and Erin think that the British accent is cool and begged to visit the UK.

Our itinerary roughly makes a clockwise circle through England and Wales. My only regret is that we couldn't fit Scotland into the itinerary. I hope Sean Connery can forgive me!

Our itinerary:

• Bath - after we land in London we rent a car and head out immediately for south west England and the Roman ruins in the city of Bath. Along the way we will either stop for tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle or chat it up with some druids at Stonehenge to try and learn their secret for levitating large stones into position. Using Bath as our home base, we’ll also take day trips to pay homage to King Arthur's tomb at Glastonbury, and check out another stone circle in Avebury.

After last year's trip to Ireland, I have decided to keep score of the things I hit with the car. Sheep are 30 points, farm tractors and other machinery are 20 points, walls 10 points, and bushes 5 points. If any of the objects are moving, I get bonus 10 points.

• The Cotswolds - we are going to relax and enjoy the English country side at a bed and breakfast on a farm. I am really, really hoping there are Border Collies there!!

• Wales - we are going to climb the mountains in Snowdonia, storm the castles of Conwy and Caernarfon, and check out some bog snorkeling! Well, maybe not. But it sounds cool!

• York - the old medieval castle town of York with its timbered houses will be a treat just before we take the train to London!

• London - no trip is complete without London. Big Ben, the London Eye, the Tower of London and Doctor Who are all on the agenda! If I can’t find a replica Tardis to take home as a souvenir my trip will have been a failure.

• Amsterdam - a bonus stop on the way home from London, we spend a day checking out the canals of Amsterdam, Anne Frank's house, and some of the museums. Thanks to Hotwire we'll be staying in a 5 star hotel for only $112 usd a night!

Cheerio from the Delta Sky Club lounge,
Brian
