Today I made big plans to visit the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum of Art, and the Apollo Theatre. I thought that I'd have enough energy and determination..... In reality I made I spent 3 hours at the Museum of Natural history and didn't cover one quarter and was already feeling tired. Hmm... It's a very interesting place though! I spent much of my time exploring the exhibitions on the different people groups - Africans, Asians, Native Americans & Pacific Peoples. That was definitely my kind of fun. I was impressed with Pacific Peoples exhibitions, considering it was an American museum.

After staggering out the museum all bleary-eyed I caught my tour bus to Harlem to the Apollo Theatre. Harlem was originally a Dutch settlement, and pre 1920 was settled by Dutch, Irish and Jewish communities. It became a predominantly African American town after the bulding boom post 1930, and the European communities moved on. There are still remnants of the European heritage in the buildings.

It was really interesting to learn that up until 1934 the Apollo Theatre was off limits to people of colour, but ever since has been

a main-stay for up & coming talent - particularly African American. Whilst I was there, the Gorillas were setting up for their concert that evening. How bizarre - the Gorillas at Apollo?

My tour bus travelled along famous 5 Avenue towards Times Square. There's such an insane mix of old architecture and new in NY. I suppose it's like that eveywhere.... I'm still baffled by the contrast of the old stone mansions on 5th Avenue with the flashing lights and giant billboards on Time Square. So much to take in.

Overall a great day!
