U Giuliani has been open since before Australia even became a federation. Opened in 1897, this cafe on the corner of Piazza de Cinquecentro opposite Termini station is where I found myself having my first lunch in Rome. To say that I was looking forward to an 'authentic' Italian experience was an understatement, just having had an awful trip into town on the train (which cost me a lovely $22 Australian to stand on a packed train for a half hour).

The maitre-de at my cafe looks like Mario's great-grand-father. My waiter looks older than both my grandfather's combined. Just when I thought there couldn't be an older soul in the Italian workforce, the chef shuffles out with my tortelli, making a tortoise look like Roadrunner. My authentic italian experience was officially delivered. My meal was delcious and the cafe was amazing.

I was served only in Italian and answered only in Italian. It wasn't until the maitre-de saw me jotting down this very entry in my notebook that he asked 'Where are you from, bella?' When I answer, he throws his hands in the air in praise. 'Australia, fantastico!' I wouldn't call myself a fluent Italian speaker by any standards but I could tell the couple beside me where discussing what it was I did for a living. They settled on hairdressing. I interrupted 'Io sono di scrittrice de cinema,' to which I received loud ooohs and aaahhs.

The old man across from me downs three egg-sized espressos within the time I write this note. He orders a beautiful pastry from the huge window display (which makes Brunettis on Lygon look like a 7-11) which makes me contemplate one myself. Reality check Alyse!! You will be in France in just three days, let's keep carb consumption to a minimum until then 😊

I am currently at our hotel in the center of Rome (a ten minute walk from Collosseum / Spanish Steps / Trevi Fountain) about to catch up on some sleep before Ed gets here in a few hours. The church bells outside my room wake me up and remind me that I'm in beautiful Rome...the heart of Italy.

thanks kelly!
Thanks Kelly and co! Yes Ed and I have reunited and are having a fantastic time. It really is a whirlwind tour of Europe- we feel we just get settled and then have to make tracks to the next country! Better to pack in the excitement than relax we think, especially seeing as though this is Ed's only 2 weeks to do whatever he wishes over 8 months. I have passed on your well wishes to him. Can't wait for Greece next! Hope all is well back home xx much love, Lysie
