It was a very wet Sunday that we went to Alcatraz. The boat ride was a bit choppy - thank goodness it only lasted 20 minutes. A lot of the buildings are falling down, with the cell block being one of the only buildings remaining standing.
The audio tour is recommended and it will take you around the cell block, fully explaining the hardships as well as the attempted escapes made by the inmates. It was interesting to learn that families of the jail wardens actually lived on the island and commuted daily by boat to the mainland to attend school. Apparently, the children would stand outside the jail block and sing Christmas carols to the inmates each Christmas Eve. The jail ceased functioning as such on 31st March 1962.
