For the past year, my friend Nora and I have been taking kickboxing lessons here in Dar. Our instructor comes to our campus and we have a one hour private lesson in our campus gymnasium, twice a week. Perhaps one of the coolest parts about this new boxing hobby, is that our instructor used to be the Junior East African Champion, and his brother- Japhet Kaseba- is the Champion! Talk about credentials for a trainer!
So along with our lessons, our instructor- Jackson- also took us to some local boxing matches. We went to the quarterfinals and then to the championship matches. We were the only wazungu (foreigners) at the match, so we were awarded immediate VIP status and seating, and got to enjoy the matches from an excellent vantage point. It was a great way to experience some local flavor, sport, and fun!
