Day 334 - Kangaroo Valley to Depot Beach

What a funny night that was, claimed by a Wombat! If we hadn’t seen it with our own eyes we would never have believed it. The lawn mowers were out again this morning which is a shame for the Wombats. They don’t seem to like cut grass and are steering clear of the piles left behind by the mowing team. We’ve really enjoyed our stay in Bendeela, it’s one of those simplistic places where there’s no set agenda of what to see or do - you can just relax and take your time.

We even managed to take our time packing up this morning. We’re on the move again, although we should admit that staying here for another night was given decent consideration. As tempting as that was, we decide to get going and head towards an old stomping ground.

On May 22nd 2009 Rabbit Poo $2 we found our way to Pretty Beach, a totally beautiful camp ground within Murramarang National Park. Good friends and fellow bloggers Kangaroojack have highly recommended the ‘sister’ spot of Depot Beach which is just around the bay.

The journey took just over two hours, despite the first section of it being a steep climb out of Kangaroo Valley. Whoever would have guessed there would be another hill to drive up today

we arrived at Depot Beach with plenty of the day left. The camp ground is fairly well set out here and there’s plenty of room. We’d forgotten what a costly state New South Wales can be in terms of National Park fees. There’s a Day Use fee of $7 (per day) and to camp here it’s $28 per night for a powered site. I haggle a bit with the chap checking us in and at least manage to get the Day Use fee reduced so we only pay for one day not three.

It’s a pretty outlook across the beach and once we were all set up we went for a walk in the direction of Pebbly Beach. There’s plenty of shells strewn about from the incoming tide and lots of unidentified sea creatures too! We walked as far as we could before we would have had to start rock climbing to get around the sea, when we reached that point we turned around and came back to camp.

We needed a couple of things from Batemans Bay so drove out there, got some information on a mountain walk we hope to do tomorrow and ate one of the best ice-creams we’ve had on the whole trip! I thought we'd go for two child sized cones - just aswel we did really as they were HUGE! There was no time for a blog photo of either my Boysenberry mix or Darryl’s Liquorice, there was only time to eat them! Yummy!

The trip to the visitors centre proved worth while. The lady there was really helpful. Not only did she have information on the Pigeon House Mountain walk for tomorrow but I also got Dar a fishing licence (you need one to even fish in the ocean when inside New South Wales). I returned triumphant to the car and put a smile on Dar’s face when I gave him the fishing licence.

When we got back to camp he grabbed the rod & the bait box whilst I grabbed the dirty washing. In a couple of hours we had clean washing but still no fish! Where are we going wrong?!

The nightly routine of dinner, Rummikub, bed was thrown into disarray tonight when we decided on a late evening shower because of the early start for the planned walk tomorrow. The showers here have to be fed with 20c coins to keep the water hot, there’s no warning when the money’s run out the water just goes cold!

One last round of Rummikub saw the lead Darryl has built up begin to whittle away as I clawed back to 4 - 3! It’s pretty addictive, especially when you’re losing but we call it a night after game 3!
