When I got up at 7.00 this morning the sun was streaming into the apartment. By half past, the clouds had come over and I thought uh oh another wet day - but no! By 10.00 it was gloriously sunny and we were debating whether to try the pool or the beach first.

We called in on Karen, the Manager, to organise the next few days’ and stopped to discuss Fijian curries - and came away with some of her curry spices out of her freezer ... so you can guess what I’m cooking up for tonight! I suppose we’d better come clean and confess that we’ve decided that we aren’t going to rent a car and charge up to Cape Tribulation, neither are we going to do the same, but stop at Port Douglas instead - we are enjoying putting our feet up too much, and its good for John to have a week without having to drive - although we may be moaning about the buses by the end of the week!! (Although I doubt that - we asked where the nearest stop was and were told to stand anywhere, the bus will just stop for you!)

And so, another lazy day - one of us had a dip in the pool while the other one would only put his toes in and professed it was far too cold. We went for a stroll up the beach and both had a great time leaping around in the very, very, very high waves! (and getting completely covered every now and then!) The beach is rather lovely, with the wonderful soft sand we’ve come to expect. However, I should say that seawater looks muddy yellow! However, it is rather odd to see a tiny area roped off as the safe area to swim, the rest of the beach belongs to the ‘stingers’ - and unlike the nuisance jelly fish in Borneo, these ones can kill if they sting you. The sign warning that crocodiles could be on the beach didn’t help much either ... big debate (between us) as to which side of the stinger nets they’d prefer to be!!

From our vantage point (ie our balcony) its amazing how many people walk the beach with their dogs. Everywhere we’ve been, there is always rolls of ‘poobags’ available to clean up should the unmentionable occur - and as John says, everywhere we’ve been has been pristine, and this beach is no exception.

What to do in Cairns!!
Hi, glad John is getting a rest at last. When I was in Cairns I was a lot younger and fitter - but one of the things I would recommend is taking the train up to Kuranda on the Atherton Tablelands - the views are amazing and there used to be a craft market up there - but it may be out of season. Catch up soon, love, Sarah
