Heute ist Montag 1.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
Und ich war heute autos anschauen. Also eigentlich war ich nur mit chris - jemand der in brown sugar backpacker arbeitet - zu der garage gefahren wo er sein auto gekauft hat und dort habe ich die dame gefragt ob sie nicht was für mich hätte. Sie hat mich mit grossen augen angeschaut und gesagt, dass momentan viele leute einen 4x4 suchen und mit meinen preisvorstellungen werde ich da lange suchen müssen... aber sie telefonierte noch rum und fand nix anderes als autos für 120'000 Rand (grob 12'000 euro) oder höher.
Super - dachte ich mir, das kann ja heiter werden. Vor allem weil ich eigentlich nur diese woche zeit habe und am 9.2. im camp ganz im norden vom land sein muss... und ohne auto geht das nicht!
Nun, ich ging dann shoppen, da ich einige sachen zu hause vergessen habe und irgendwann hat die dame angerufen aber ich habe es nicht bemerkt, da ich mein telefon in der tasche hatte.
Als ich dann auf dem rückweg vom shopping center war, sah ich es und rufte zurück. Ich glaubte kaum als sie mir mitteilte dass sie ein auto für mich habe, aber kein 4x4 sondern einfach höher ab boden als ein pw - was ich brauche - und erst recht noch in meinem budget! Ich solle um 16 uhr vorbeikommen...
Zurück im backpacker dachte ich, da muss zwingend einen hacken dran sein. Es kann nicht sein dass ich am ersten tag ein auto finde und erst recht noch zu dem preis. Ich ging dort zwar hin aber dachte ich werde ein riesiger rosthaufen antreffen und gar nicht was ich mir vorstellte.
Nun, ich wurde positiv überrascht und habe genau so ein auto gesucht wie es vor mir stand 😊 Ok, vielleicht kein mitsubishi colt und nicht mit so vielen kilometern...
Aber ich kann für mein budget nicht alles haben !
Ich ging auf ne kleine spritzfahrt... und jetzt gehört es mir 😊 Somit bin ich im besitz eines mitsubishi colt 2800td pioneer mit doppelkabine - ha ! wer hätte das gedacht???
... ich hoffe, dass ich da ein auto gekauft habe, dass mir zukünftig keine schwierigkeiten machen wird! Fingers crossed !

Dienstag 2.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
Heute habe ich einen gemütlichen tag gehabt... bin um 8.30 uhr aufgestanden und bin runter in die küche gegangen um mir einen tee und ein toast zu machen. Habe das dann auf der grossen terrasse gegessen/getrunken und dazu gelesen. Als die sonne zu stark wurde, bin ich dann hoch zu meinem zimmer, welches wie ein kleines gartenhäus'chen aussieht und habe dort weiter gelesen...
als ich genug gelesen hatte, habe ich noch aufgefrischt für den vogel kurs welcher nächste woche mittwochs beginnt. Ich will ja nicht wie ein idiot vor den leuten stehen 😊
mittlerweile ist es 18.40 und es regnet - ist aber nix abnormales, denn es ist sommer und somit regenzeit. Sitze aber immer noch in t-shirt draussen auf meinem kleinen balkon.
Habe heute morgen das geld fürs auto per ebanking überwiesen - hoffe das klappt, dann hätte ich vor dem wochenende mein auto und wäre mobil!

Mittwoch 3.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
Heute war geplant, dass ich mich mit den 3 ehemaligen mitstudenten chris, debs & marten treffe. Habe mich gefreut abwechslung in meinen doch eher unspektakulären alltag rein zu kriegen... aber leider wurde daraus nix. Wir sind zwar alle 4 in joburg, aber an drei verschiedenen orten über die ganze stadt verteilt - und die stadt hat 3,2 millionen einwohner (im 2001 - somit heute viel-viel-viel mehr !) und ist daher die grösste metropolregion im südlichen afrika. Wenn man die agglomeration dazu zählt, waren es im 2001 8,5 milloinen. Das sind mehr leute in einer stadt als in der ganzen schweiz leben !
Außerdem ist johannesburg - welches auf 1750mum liegt - eine der größten städte weltweit, die weder am meer noch an einem bedeutenden fluss noch an einem anderen bedeutenden gewässer liegt.

Heute wurde mein autogeld transferiert und wenn ich glück habe, dann habe ich übermorgen mein auto ! langsam wird es hier saulangweilig... habe bereits begonnen meine tierlisten mit wissenschaftlichen namen zu ergänzen und das zeigt doch, dass es langsam tragische auswirkungen hat 😊.
Da ich kein geld ausgeben will, bin ich ans backpacker gebunden. Wenn ich ins einkaufszenter will (um szenenwechsel zu haben) muss ich 60 rand pro weg zahlen (fast 9CHF) oder ich gehe eine stunde zu fuss - pro weg!
Vorgestern ging ich mit 2 aus zimbabwe mit dem „schwarzen taxi“ zum einkaufszentrum... das kostete 7 rand pro weg. Das sind die maxi-taxis wo ca 20 schwarze drinnen sitzen. Und ich 😊 Aber die halten leider nicht wenn ich alleine am strassenrand stehe...
Bin froh wenn ich das auto endlich habe, dann kann ich raus aus der stadt !
Habe heute mitgeteilt bekommen, dass ich eine woche später in makuleke sein muss. Schade, habe mich so gefreut auf den vogelkurs mit bruce.
Jetzt habe ich zeit alleine durch den kruger zu fahren - da kostet die camping-übernachtung erst recht noch weniger als in einem backpacker ein einzelzimmer zu haben.

Donnerstag 4.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
Bin um halb neun aufgestanden, habe jenste pläne geschmiedet für die nächste woche und ging dann um die Mittagszeit zu fuss richtung china town. Ist ca.20 min die strasse runter neben dem ellis park stadion parkplatz vorbei (wm stadion) - musste airtime kaufen für mein prepaid handy. Auf halbem weg hat es zu tropfen angefangen und als ich dort ankam „schiffte es bindfäden“ !
Habe weder schirm noch regenjacke noch sonst was mitgehabt und der intensive regenschauer dauerte ungefähr ne stunde... das heisst ich hab ne stunde dort gewartet und dem treiben in china town zugeschaut. Hatte keine andere wahl - oder ich wäre komplett durchnässt im backpacker angekommen. Das wollte ich nicht wirklich. Hatte dann glück und habe mich für den richtigen moment entschieden dort ab zu marschieren, denn ich wurde fast nicht nass.
Am Nachmittag habe ich in meinem buch weiter gelesen, habe wohl noch nie so viel in so kurzer zeit in meiner freizeit gelesen. Aber das buch ist interessant und bald wird es fertig sein!

Freitag 5.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
und bereits ist Freitag... warte darauf, dass die autoverkäuferin mich anruft und das auto abholbereit ist. Muss hier raus, unbedingt !!!
Leider hat sich das abholen von meinem auto um nen tag verschoben... sie konnten die noch zu reparierende „tourenanzeige“ heute morgen nicht reparieren und somit werde ich erst morgen den wagen holen - ohne funktionierende anzeige. Aber sie hat mir versprochen, dass ich den wagen irgendwann vorbei bringen kann für nen tag und dann wird es nachträglich erledigt.
Ein weiteres problem ist, dass ich ende letztes jahr oli (ein ehemaliger mitstudent) mein GPS gegeben habe und der ist erst am montag in johannesburg. Somit muss ich entweder ohne GPS fahren oder ich warte bis montag...
nun hat sich noch ein weiteres problemchen entwickelt: die leute, die meine coolbox und das ganze gampingzeugs (teller, gabeln, becher, kocher) haben, sind am wochenende auch nicht zu hause. Somit bin ich wohl auch noch am montag in der umgebung... scheisse.
Ah - etwas positives hat sich an diesem Freitag doch noch ereignet: habe mir aus frust mit all den problemchen eine pizza bestellt. (bisher habe ich nur vom frühstück & 2minuten nudeln und meinem schokoladevorrat gelebt 😊 ). Da die pizza 55 minuten brauchte bis sie ausgeliefert wurde, habe ich sie gratis erhalten 😱
Und heute abend hat mich noch jenny aus nelspruit angerufen und mich gefragt wo ich bin. Werde die 2 mädels nächste woche treffen, freue mich schon.

Samstag 6.2.2010 - pretoria bei jan-marten zu hause
Ging um 8 uhr das auto holen, hat alles geklappt. Bin zurück ins backpacker gefahren (thuso fuhr vor mir, damit ich zurück finde) habe meine sachen gepackt und bin dort abgefahren richtung pretoria.
Das wurde ne richtige herausforderung... ohne GPS vom backpacker in west-johannesburg nach pretoria fahren zu jan-martens zuhause. War ja bereits einige male dort, aber es dann selber zu finden ist ne andere sache...
Ich war voller zuversicht, dass ich das mit den mickrigen angaben finden werde. Bin losgefahren durch sandton, midrand, centurion und dann merkte ich: upps, bin zu weit gefahren. Habe die nächste ausfahrt genommen - war ja auf der autobahn, welche durch die stadt führt und auch johannesburg und pretoria verbindet - und habe versucht irgendwie wieder auf die selbe strasse zu gelangen. Nun, das ist ein bisschen schwierig bei all den strassen... hab es aber nach ca 20 minuten doch noch geschafft und bin auf der N1 nun richtung süden gefahren. Irgendwann habe ich die ausfahrt gesehen und bin schlussendlich zu jan-martens haus hingefahren. War danach doch ein bisschen erleichtert, denn zwischenzeitlich habe ich fast nicht mehr daran geglaubt...
Hier angekommen habe ich dann mein bike zusammengeschraubt und feststellen müssen, das es einige kratzer abgekriegt hat. Am abend hatten seine eltern jenste leute eingeladen und wir hatten einen WM abend. Jede eingeladene person musste sich ein team aussuchen und so wurden von den 25 leuten 9 teams ausgewählt. Jan-martens mutter hat dann von jedem land etwas gekocht. War super lecker und ein gemütlicher abend wo ich dann mein erstes bier getrunken habe, seit ich in südafrika bin.

Abfahrt von pretoria nach nelspruit in meinem auto, gefolgt von oli in seinem landrover.
Haben uns mit jenny an ihrem arbeitsplatz verabredet. ich konnte mein auto dort parkieren, damit nicht oli und ich in beiden autos durch den krüger fahren.
Die erste nacht haben wir im pretoriuskop camp verbracht.
Gefolgt von lower sabie camp, satara camp und am valentinstag waren wir in letaba camp. Am abend waren wir ausnahmsweise im restaurant essen. Dort haben wir 2 thick tailed bushbabies gesehen, 1 meter von uns weg !

Rubbish run with oli to tshikondweni mine and on one point it was 46 degrees celsius - obviously in the sun, but in the shade it was only some degrees colder...
The students arrived and pete went out with them on a drive, so we had off.
We had lunch and it started to rain and didnt stop...

Donnerstg 18.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
In the morning the soil was completely soaked, but we walked with bruce and 5 students direction lala palm windmil and into the fever tree forest. There bruce realized that it was a bit too much rain and we finaly walked up the ridge and 3,5 h later we were back at the camp. Was a nice walk, but no encounters...
Before lunch the filmcrew arrived. They want to make a footage with some of the most experienced trails guide in south africa.
We had lunch and then we went out with the car. the filmcrew wanted to take some footage with bruce beeing a guide - and i was there as his backup ! i was realy looking forward to this afternoon activity, bcs it was only bruce, me, oli and pete and the crew. i got a bit nervous when he told about approaching a herd of buffalos over the ridge... but in the background we saw the rain coming and not 5 minutes later it was again pouring down with rain... unfortunately it did not stop and we had to head back to camp.

Freitag 19.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
Walk with phil and the students in the morning to mashisiti spring. It was raining up and on during the walk, but was actually realy nice to walk in this kind of temperature. On the drive back to camp it started pouring down with rain and we were completely soaked when we got back to camp, but everyone took it with humor ! we even had a little stream through camp and on some parts of the road the water was realy deep!
Then we had to bring all the food dee brought into the kitchen & shed.
Breakfast and afterwards we had to clean the rifle completely, bcs they were completely soaked... the complete rifle taking appart, cleaning, oiling and putting together again took me about an hour. Afterwards i went for a little nap until the drums went and lunch was ready. It started to rain again and therefore no activity again.
In the evening we had some beers and were chatting with the filmcrew - herd some funny guiding stories...

Samstag 20.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
Oli und ich hatten weckdienst, somit klingelte der wecker bereits um 20 vor 5 !
Ging mit bruce, 4 ecoquest students und der filmcrew raus. Haben nen leopard gehört unweit vom auto entfernt. Bruce entschloss den zu suchen... sind schlussendlich 2h durch den mopani wald gelaufen. Leider haben wir ihn nicht gesehen - aber die wahrscheinlihkeit dass wir ihn sehen werden waren eh ungefähr bei 0%
Nach dem frühstück half ich pete den landrover zu reparieren...

2.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
Mittlerweile ist dienstag und heute morgen sind die studenten abgereist.
War ne schöne zeit, leider war das wetter nicht das beste. Aber die letzten paar tage hat es wenigstens nicht mehr geregnet. Wir haben einige mal die büffel gesehen, einmal waren wir ganz nahe an nashörnern - haben sie aber nur wegrennen hören. Einmal sahen sie auf ner Nachmittagsfahrt einen elefantenbullen (die einzige Nachmittagsfahrt wo oli und ich frei hatten) und einmal auf nem marsch und einmal auf ner fahrt haben sie einen leoparden gesehen. Also alles in allem nicht all zu schlecht, obwohl januar/februar nicht die beste zeit ist in makuleke zu sein, da die grossen tiere nicht zu massen hier sind...
Wir waren einmal bei outpost und einmal im pafuri camp um ein kühles bierchen zu trinken und natürlich den studenten die anderen 2 lodges in der concession zu zeigen. Ein Vormittag waren wir auch noch auf dem schiessstand.
Oli hat ab heute ne woche frei und ich bin ne weitere woche hier für den birding kurs - danach habe ich ne woche frei.
Habe heute morgen 3 der 10 leute zur levuvu brücke gebracht, wo sie abgeholt wurden. Seit 9 uhr bin ich zurück und habe den landrover gewaschen und mein zelt aufgeräumt. Ist komisch alleine hier im camp zu sein. Bruce, dee and phil gingen heute morgen früh nach louis trichardt und kommen erst heute am späten Nachmittag zurück.
Wird wohl eh ein bisschen komisch sein die nächste woche denn ich habe seit 3 wochen mehr oder weniger 24/7 mit oli verbracht. Zuerst waren wir im krüger für paar tage und hier teilen wir auch ein zelt zusammen... der mensch gewöhnt sich so schnell an gewisse situationen.

4.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
gestern morgen stand ich um 10 nach 6 auf und habe mich bereit gemacht um nach tshikwondeni zu fahren um den abfall zu entsorgen, diesel und petrol zu holen, zum postamt zu gehen und schlussendlich im kleinen einkaufszentrum brot fürs camp zu kaufen. Tshikwondeni ist 1,5 h fahrt vom camp entfernt und ich musste zum ersten mal mit einem anhänger fahren... wäre ja alles kein problem, wenn man nicht rückwärts einparken müsste auf der müllhalde, oder auf ner strasse umdrehen weil man zu weit gefahren ist ☺
nach 4 h war ich zurück im camp, habe 100lt diesel abgeladen, das brot in die küche gebracht, post ins büro gebracht und danach das fahrzeug plus den anhänger mit dem hochdruckreiniger gewaschen. Danach hatte ich 20 minuten zeit um zu duschen und um halb 2 musste ich richtung pafuri gate um die neuen leute abzuholen, welche für ne woche einen birding kurs absolvieren. Vom gate sind wir ca 35 minuten im konvoi richtung parkplatz gefahren. Danach alles auf den anhänger und den landrover geladen - schlussendlich sind wir um halb 5 im camp angekommen.
Nach 7.30 uhr gab es das abendessen und ich war fix und fertig von dem rumfahren, dass ich direkt ins bett bin.

Heute hat um 4.50 der wecker geklingelt und da ich so früh ins bett ging, hatte ich überhaupt kein problem um 5.05 aufzustehen - nachdem ich ihn das 2 x abgestellt hatte...
Ging mit bruce auf nen marsch richtung lala palm windmühle und weiter in den fieberbaum wald - war super schön! Habe viele vögel gesehen. Das wetter ist immer noch nicht all zu gut, es hat zeitweise getröpfelt aber ist ja zum glück nicht kalt. Jetzt haben die leute unterricht und ich gehe mein Mittagsschläfchen machen, damit ich für heute Nachmittag wieder fit bin.

7.3.2010 - sonntag - ecotraining makuleke camp
mittlerweile ist Sonntag und der birding kurs ist auch fast vorbei. Hatten gestern abend ne kleine party, da dani (von pafuri wilderness camp) geburtstag hat und ihre eltern und 2 brüder bei uns im kurs sind. Sie brachte champagner und eiswürfel vorbei ☺

8.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
der letzte tag des birding kurses.
Gingen am morgen auf nen marsch und nach dem frühstück schrieben wir den advanced birding test.
dieser besteht aus einer theorie, 40 fotos mit vogelbilder und dann 10 bilder wo man das bestimmungsbuch gebrauchen konnte und schlussendlich 50 vogelstimmen erkennen.
Ich habe diesen test mit 88% bestanden - juhuuuuiii !
Am Nachmittag ging ich dann mit johna auf den letzten marsch zum sandpath/limpopo lookout welcher gemütliche 2h dauerte. Dort haben wir alle anderen getroffen und haben ein kühles bierchen (ich nicht) getrunken und den sonnenuntergang angeschaut.
Hatten dann das abendessen und danach sassen wir noch ein bisschen ums feuer und haben gequatscht. Wurde dann doch 2.30 uhr bis die letzten zu bett gingen...
Das war ne super lustige gruppe. Archie war der lacher der woche - er hat uns so fest zum lachen gebracht dass am nächsten morgen die bauchmuskulatur schmerzte!

dienstag 9.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
die ersten studenten brachte phil um 7.30 uhr zum parkplatz. Danach brachte bruce die 2 studenten zum fliegerlandeplatz und dani's familie zum pafuri wilderness camp. Um 11 uhr war er zurück und wir mussten den ganzen müll auf den anhänger aufladen plus 10 leere 20 lt kanister diesel, 2 leere 20 lt kanister benzin, eine 48lt gasflasche plus ein reserverad mit einem loch. Ich führ dann um 11.45 richtung tsikwondeni um all die sachen zu erledigen... 4 stunden später war ich zurück. Da die kanister nicht wirklich dicht sind, musste ich danach das fahrzeug mit dem hochdruckreiniger waschen.
Am abend hatten dee, bruce, phil, oli (zurück aus der woche urlaub) und ich ein leckeres abendessen und sassen ne ganze weile am tisch und hatten das eine oder andere bierchen.
Dee & bruce fahren morgen in den 6 wöchigen urlaub nach australien und das wurde natürlich auch noch ein bisschen gefeiert. War ein lustiger abend, mit vielen stories von phil und bruce...

mittwoch 10.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
um 5.15 aufgestanden, die restlichen sachen gepackt.
Dee, bruce und phil fuhren nach nelspruit und ich durfte mit ihnen mitfahren und eigentlich wollten sie um 6 uhr fahren... aber es wurde dann 20 vor 7 bis alles im auto war und wir das camp verlassen haben.
Wir waren schlussendlich um 2 uhr in nelspruit und sie haben mich zu jen & dee nach hause gebracht. Haben auf der fahrt kaum zusammen gesprochen, denn die beiden herren hatten am abend zuvor doch einige bierchen getrunken gehabt und da wurde das schlafen bevorzugt.
Mir ging es zum glück prima - habe aber zur vorbeugung am abend bevor wir ins bett gingen 2 aspirin genommen ☺
haben am abend ein gemütliches BBQ gehabt und gingen nicht all zu spät ins bett.

11.3.2010
habe bei jenny und dee auf dem sofa geschlafen und hatte meine mühe mit einschlafen gestern abend, da ich an all den zivilisationslärm nicht mehr gewohnt bin... aber ich konnte ja liegen bleiben 😱
dee stand um 4.14 auf um um 5 uhr das haus zu verlassen und um 7 uhr mit der arbeit zu beginnen ! sie arbeitet in einer miene in der nähe von barbeton. jenny musste erst um 12 uhr arbeiten - als küchenchefin - und daher hatten wir einen gemütlichen morgen.
habe einige pläne für heute, mal schauen was ich alles erledigen kann.
werde hier bleiben bis ende der woche - was ja nicht all zu lange ist, da bereits donnerstag ist. danach gehen wir 3 wohl für ne nacht nach in den krüger und ich werde weiter richtung norden gehen und sie beide wieder zurück nach nelspruit.

morgen werden noch fotos folgen, aber muss in ein internet cafe um diese hochzuladen

nach meiner woche frei werde ich ab dienstag wieder im ecotrining camp im norden vom park sein für 4 wochen um dort als trails guide backup einen trailsguide kurs zu begleiten. somit einmal mehr: kein telefon kontakt...

and i went to look for cars. Went with a guy who works for the backpacker to the garage he bought his car from and i spoke to the lady there and told her what kind of car i am looking for and what ammount of money i want to spend. She told me that a lot of people are looking for 4x4 cars or cars with high clearance... and maybe i need to spend a bit more money for a car like that. She phoned arround and found cars for 120'000 rand (arround 12'000 euros) or even more expensive.
Ok, that was what i expected anyway... and i need to buy a car in this week bcs i need to drive up to the camp in the northest part of kruger to start working there at the 9.2. ! no chance to get there without a car.
Left the garage and went to the shopping center to buy some things i left at home bcs of weight restrictions on the plane. The women from the garage phoned me whoile i was in the shoping center and told me she found a car for me. She offered me a mitsubishi colt pick up - not 4x4 - but with higher clearance than a normal car. So exactly what i need 😊
I sholuld come arround at 4 o'clock...
Back at the backpacker i thought, there has to be something wrong with it... i can not be so lucky to find a car on day one where other people where looking for one during months!
I went there but was thinking i will find a rusty old crap car and not at all what i expected. Well, i got positively surprised about the car i saw there - exactly what i was looking for 😊 !
Ok, maybe not a mitsubishi colt and not with that much kilometers on the wheels... but form y budget i couldn't realy expect more than that !
I went for a short ride with it... and now it is mine 😊 therefore i am the proud owner of a mitsubishi colt 2800td pioneer with double cab ! hey, who would have thought that?!
... i hope i bought a car with which i wont have troubles all the time! Fingers crossed !

had a relaxed day today... got up at 8.30 and went down to the kitchen to make me a toast and a tea. Had it on the big terasse while readin the book „game rangers to remember“
as the sun got too strong i went to my room, which is like a little garden house, and i continued reading. As i was tired of reading the book i freshed up my knowledge fort he coming birding course, which will start next wednesday. I dont want to stay in front of them and not beeing able to answer normal questions. Would make me feel like a twat! 😊
Transfered the money fort he car this morning via ebanking - hope that will all go smooth and that would mean that i will have a car before the weekend!

wednesday 3.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
i planed to meet the other 3 one year students chris, debs & marten who all stay in joburg/pretoria at the moment. Was looking forward to get a bit of change in my monotonuous days... but unfortunately it didn't happen. In joburg and the sorrounding areas life more people than in switzerland, so it is big and the distances are not short to just meet someone for a drink.

I am getting bored... i started to add sientific names to my bird and animal lists. Thats how bored i am !
Because i need to safe some money, i need to stay at the backpacker. If i want to go to the mall (to get a change in scenery) i have to pay 60 rand on way (like 6 euros) or i could walk it in 60 minutes - per way!
The day before yestarday i went with 2 chicks from zimbabwe with the „black taxi“ to the mall. That costed me 7 rand (0,7 euros). This are the maxi taxis with 9 seats, but 20 black people inside - and me 😊 but unfortunately they dont Stopp if i stay by my self at the roadside...
I will be so happy if i finally get my car - then i can leave to city!
Today i got the message that i only need to be in makuleke one week later. I was so looking forward this birding course with bruce... but now i have time to drive through kruger by myself and take soem pictures!

thursday 4.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
got up at 8.30 und planned all kind of different plans fort he next week and after this i went to china town 20 minutes down the road passing ellis park stadion (world cup stadion). I had to buy airtime form y phone. As i arrived there it started to rain very heavily and i took neighter an umbrella or a raincoat with me... the rain lasted for about an hour and meanwhile i was sitting at the corner to the main road/china town road and observed peolpe. I couldnt do anything else than this or getting soaked on the way up to the backpacker... i decided on the perfect time to get back and i only catched some drops until i was back.
In the afternoon i continued reading the book „a game ranger remembers“. I think i never read that much in a weeks time before - except studying, of course...

friday 5.2.2010 - johannesburg, brown sugar backpacker
i am waiting that the lady form the car dealership is calling and tells me that the car is ready. I need to leave - ASAP !!!
but unfortunately i can only go tomorrow and fetch it.
An other problem is, that i gave olivier (ex one year student) my GPS and he weill only be back in pretoria on monday. Therefore i can leave without GPS or i have to wait until he will be back...
And an other problem is, that the people which have my coolerbox & camping things since my uncle left it there last november wont be in johannesburg at the weekend as well. Therefore i will be here until monday, i think. Bcs i dont want to leave without coolerbox and camping gear and as well not without GPS...
But at least something positive happend today: i ordered a pizza bcs i was frustrated about the situation (until now i lived from backpacker breakfast & 2minute noodles and my swiss chocolat stack 😊]) bcs the pizza was only delivered after 55 minutes, i go it for free 😱

saturday 6.2.2010 - pretoria at jan-martens place
went to fetch my car at 8 o'clock. Drove back to the backpacker and packed my things and left direction pretoria - without GPS... what a challange to drive from west-joburg to martens home in pretoria. Even if i was there before, but to drive in this highway-road-chaos by my self is a different stroy. But i was full of confidence that i can find my way with this little information i had. Left there and drove through sandton, midrand, centurion and then i realized that i went too far. Took the next one out - johannesburg and pretoria are connected with a 4 lane highway - and tried to get back to the same road but obviously going the other way. Well, that was a bit difficult with all this roads and not a lot of signs but after 20 minutes i was back on track on N1 south. Some time later i saw a familiar troadsign and left the highway again and drove staraight to martens house. I was happy to be there bcs on a certain time driving on the highway i was thinking tat there is no way that i can find it .
at the familiar place i assembled my bike and realized that it got some scratches from the flight. for the evening martens parents organized a world cup evening where every invited person had to choos a team. 25 peaople choosed 9 different teams. Jan-Martns mother cooked from this 9 countries each a meal. It was delicious and a pleasant evening. Had my first beer since i was back in south africa !

sunday 7.2.2010 - pretoria at jan-martens place
had a brunch arround 12ish and afterwards i finished my book. I had an easy afternoon, packed my things and in the evening we fetched a pizza and watched a video.

monday 8.2.2010 - pretoria at jan-martens place
went to tessa in sandton to fetch my coolerbox (with the aid of martens GPS), orgaized the car insurance, went to check my car, watched an other video, surched some papers i lost... and oli arrived at martens place

thuesday 9.2.2010 - pretoria at jan-martens place
had to go and install an anti hi-jack safety device, bcs my car is apparently a high risk car to get stolen or get hi-jacked... otherwise the insuranca company would not insure my car.

wednesday 10.2.2010 - pretoria at jan-martens place
had to go and register my car in johannesburg and in the evening oli, jan-marten and myself went out with some other friends of jan-marten...

thursday 11.2.2010 - with oli on t e way direction makuleke
oli and myself drove from pretoria to nelspruit - each in the own car. I phoned jennifer in nelspruit and asked her if i can leave my car with them, that oli and me dont have to drive with 2 cars through kruger. We met jen at the sheppards boutique hotel where she works as a chef and left the car with her.
We spent the first night in pretoriouskop camp, followed by lower sabie camp, satara camp und at valentinsday we were at letaba camp. In the evening we went for a change to the restaurant for dinner.

Dee & bruce and phil arrived after 6
Had some more beers and went to bed

wednesday 17.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
Rubbish run with oli to tshikondweni mine and on one point it was 46 degrees celsius - obviously in the sun, but in the shade it was only some degrees colder...
The students arrived and pete went out with them on a drive, so we had off.
We had lunch and it started to rain and didnt stop...

thursday 18.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
In the morning the soil was completely soaked, but we walked with bruce and 5 students direction lala palm windmil and into the fever tree forest. There bruce realized that it was a bit too much rain and we finaly walked up the ridge and 3,5 h later we were back at the camp. Was a nice walk, but no encounters...
Before lunch the filmcrew arrived. They want to make a footage with some of the most experienced trails guide in south africa.
We had lunch and then we went out with the car. the filmcrew wanted to take some footage with bruce beeing a guide - and i was there as his backup ! i was realy looking forward to this afternoon activity, bcs it was only bruce, me, oli and pete and the crew. i got a bit nervous when he told about approaching a herd of buffalos over the ridge... but in the background we saw the rain coming and not 5 minutes later it was again pouring down with rain... unfortunately it did not stop and we had to head back to camp.

friday 19.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
Walk with phil and the students in the morning to mashisiti spring. It was raining up and on during the walk, but was actually realy nice to walk in this kind of temperature. On the drive back to camp it started pouring down with rain and we were completely soaked when we got back to camp, but everyone took it with humor ! we even had a little stream through camp and on some parts of the road the water was realy deep!
Then we had to bring all the food dee brought into the kitchen & shed.
Breakfast and afterwards we had to clean the rifle completely, bcs they were completely soaked... the complete rifle taking appart, cleaning, oiling and putting together again took me about an hour. Afterwards i went for a little nap until the drums went and lunch was ready. It started to rain again and therefore no activity again.
In the evening we had some beers and were chatting with the filmcrew - heard some funny guiding stories...

saturday 20.2.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
oli and myself had to do the wack-up call, therefore the alarm rang at 20 to 5 !
i went with bruce, 4 ecoquest students and the filmcrew on a walk. Heard a leopard close to the car while we were driving direction nuambi pan. Bruce decided to go and look for him... we finally walked 2h through the mopani forest and unfortunately we couldn't spot him. But the chances to see a leopard on a walk are fairly slim anyway.

2.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp
meanwhile is is thuesday and the students left the camp today. It was a lovely time with them, but unfortunately the weather was not the best. but the last some days it wasn't raining anymore. We saw several timest he buffalos, once we were very close to rhinos but we just heard them ranning away. On one drive they saw an elephant bull (the afternoon oli and myself had off). Once on a drive and on a walk they saw a leopard. Overall not too bad for february, normaly the big & hairy one are not often in the far north of the park.
We were once at outpost (5* lodge in the concession) and once at pafuri wilderness camp for a cool beer and to show the students the 2 lodges in the area. One morning we were with the students at the shooting range.
Oli got off for one week and i stay here fort he advanced birding course - afterwards i will have a week off.
This morning i brought 3 of the 10 students to the levuvu bridge where 1 got fetched by a transfer company and the other 2 took their own car from the parking and left direction home. Since 9 o'clock i am back in camp and washed the land rover and cleaned/reorganized my tent. It is strange to be here just by my self and no one else in camp! The instructors left early this morning to louise trichardt and will only return in the late afternoon.
It will be a bit different the next week, bcs i spent the last 3 weeks more or less 24/7 with oli. First we spent some days in kruger together and in makuleke camp we have to share a tent as back-up people have to.

4.3.2010 - ecotraining makuleke camp / advanced birding course
yesterday morning i left bed at 10 past 6 and got ready to leave to tshikondeni to dump the rubbish from camp, to refill the diesel and petrol canisters, to go to the post office and finally to go and buy some bread. It is 1,5 h drive and i had to drive a trailer fort he first time... would not be a problem if i would not have to reverse at the rubbish dump or to turn arround bcs i missed the turnoff... 😱
after 4 h i was back in camp, offloaded 100lt of diesel, brought the bread to the kitchen, the letters to the office and cleaned the land rover and the trailer with the high pressure hose.
Then i had 20 minutes time to take a shower and i had to leave at 13.30 direction pafuri main gate to fetch the new students for the one week birding course. From there weh ad to drive 35 minutes to the parking, loading all the bags onto the trailer and drive with the students/guests to camp where we finally arrived at 4.30 pm.
7.30 dinner and afterwards i went straight to bed, bcs i was half dead from all that driving.
The alarm clock went off at 4.50, but bcs i went to bed so early i had no problems at all to get out of bed at 5.05 - after i snoozed twice 😱
I went with bruce on a walk direction lala palm windmil and further on into the fever tree forest - it was amazing ! we saw a lot of birds. The weater is still not the best, we felt some drops on the way but at least it is not cold. Now the students have lecture and i am off to have a nap that i will be ready fort he afternoon walk.

7.3.2010 - sunday - ecotraining makuleke camp / advanced birding course
it is already sunday and the birding course is nearly over. We had yesterday a little birthday party bcs of dani from the wilderness pafuri camp. Her parents and brothers are attending the birding course and they brought champagner and ice cubes 😱

8.3.2010 - monday - ecotraining makuleke camp / advanced birding course
the last day of the birding course
we went on a walk in the morning as usual and in the afternoon we wrote the advanced birding test. It contains a theory, 40 pictures of birds to identify without book and an other 10 pictures where we could use the birdbook to identify the species and finally 50 bird calls !
i passed the test with 88%!y(MISSING)eah !
in the afternoon i went with johna the other instructor on the last walk to sandpath limpopo lookout, which takes only 2 hours. There we met up with the rest of the group and they had a cool beer (not me, had a soft drink) and we all wathed the sun set while we were standing in the limpopo river.
Had the last dinner and afterwards we were sitting arround the fire. It was 2.30 until the last ones went to bed... was a funny evening with a funny group. Archie was the clown of the week - he made us laugh so hard that our stomach muscles were hurting nearly every morning !

9.3.2010 - thuesday - ecotraining makuleke camp / advanced birding course
phil brought the first students at 7.30 to the parking, bruce drove the 2 who got fetched by a plane to the airstrip and dani's family finally to the pafuri camp.
At 11 he was back in camp and weh ad to load all the rubbish from camp onto the trailer, plus 10 empty 20lt canister of diesel, 2 petrol, an empty 48lt gas bottle plus a wheel with a puncture.
I left once more at 11.45 direction tsikondeni... 4 hours later i was back in camp and same procedure as always: offload and clean everything.
In the evening bruce, dee, phil, oli (who was back from leave) and myself a tasty dinner and were sitting arround the table for quite a while and had one or two beers.
Bruce & dee are leaving tomorrow to australia for 6 weeks. Was a funny evening with a lot of stories from phil and bruce...

10.3.2010 wednesday - ecotraining makuleke camp
got up at 5.15 to pack for my one week leave. The plan was to leave at 6... but it was 40 minutes later when everything was packed and we could leave. I drove with the 3 of them to nelspruit bcs my car was parked there.
At 2 we were in nelspruit and they drove me all the way to jen & dees house.

11.3.2010 Thursday - nelspruit
slept on their sofa and struggeled to fall asleep bcs of all the civilisation noise and the light arround the house… but I did not have to get up.
Dee got up at 4.15 to leave the house at 5 and to start working at 7 in the mine near barberton! Jenny only started to work at 12 - as a chef in a 5* hotel - so we had a lazy morning.
Have some plans for today - lets see what I can finish today
Will stay here until the end of the week - what is not too long bcs it is already Thursday.

Hallo Natali! Bin per Zufall auf Deinen Blog gestossen, und habe mich mit grossem Interessen durch alle Deine Beiträge gelesen. Ich habe 2008 im Eastern Cape ebenfalls als Field Guide gearbeitet, nachdem ich bei ULOVANE einen 1 jährigen FGASA Trails Guide Kurs besucht habe. War natürlich das beste Erlebnis meines Lebens, und deswegen freue ich mich sehr für Dich, dass Du den Sprung geschafft hast, und mit guiding offenbar Deinen Lebensunterhalt erarbeitetn kannst. Gratuliere!!!! Ich weiss aus eigener Erfahrung, dass es ein langer, harter Weg ist! Ich versuche ebenfalls immer noch meine Füsse wieder zurück in den südafrikanischen Busch zu bringen :-) Wie hast Du eigentlich das Problem work permit, residence permit und PDP gelöst?!? Das sind die 3 Gründe wieso es bei mir bis jetzt leider noch nicht geklappt hat. Würde mich freuen, wenn Du mir Deine Erfahrungen und Tips schreiben könntest!!!! Viele Grüsse aus Zürich Silvio
