We came to Peru to explore the country (obviously), but also to attend the wedding party of Angela (Chuck’s daughter) and Miguel (her husband).

The party took place on Saturday the 9th of January. Although the party did not start until about 9 in the evening, we arrived earlier in the afternoon to spend time with Angela and Miguel and his family. When we arrived almost all of the furniture in the living and dining rooms had been removed to make room for the party. There was a large table against one wall and stacks of chairs. The kitchen was filled with pots and bowls of food in the process of being prepared. There was beans, onion, garlic, meat, pastries, sauces; we will just say there was a plethora of food of all kinds. We were certainly fortunate to see everything transform into a grandiose Peruvian wedding party. Every time we entered the living and dining rooms something more had been done; the table was skirted and covered and eventually lit, a backlit backdrop was added and decorated with swans and the names of Angela and Miguel, chairs were covered with silky fabric and ribbons, cooks and a server and a speaker and a DJ arrived, an assortment of wedding cakes and platters of food were put out, and one by one the house filled up with neighbors, family, and friends.

The party began with a series of formal announcements, introductions, speeches, pictures, and dances. Angela and Miguel were introduced, parents were introduced, all of whom had to give a speech. Then the pictures; Angela and Miguel, parents, siblings, cousins, uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews, neighbors, in-laws, friends, all in attendance, minus the pets. Next were the dances; Angela and Miguel, parents, siblings, so on and so forth. Then, and finally, it was Peruvian party time. The music was playing, mostly everyone was dancing, food and beverages were being served and passed around. There were so many people dancing that when the cat tried to walk from one room to the next it turned quickly into a round of ‘kick the cat’ until it bolted out the door.

Chuck’s sister, Marmie, and her friend, Patty, arrived at about 2 in the morning. No problem; Peruvian parties last at least until dawn. Introductions were made and the dancing and drinking continued. We left at 7 in the morning and there were still people dancing. It was so nice of Marmie to also make the trip to Peru to attend what was obviously very important and special to Angela and Miguel; kudos to her!

I cannot express enough how welcoming Miguel’s family were to us. They are a truly genuine and gracious family who made me feel instantly at home. On the other hand, their parties made my brain hurt! Either way, Chuck and I appreciated and felt honored to spend time with Miguel’s family. Saludos, gracias y felicidades a Angela y Miguel, la familia Cuba Cusquisiban, Marmie y Patty, o simplemente a todos!
