Green Top Antiques
On Main Street as you go into town We were visiting Elizabethtown, KY when we heard about the small community of Glendale 9 miles south of E-town and 2 miles west of Ky 222. It was snowing the day we arrived and as we entered the community we were reminded of similar scenes we had been to in Vermont and New Hampshire. Upon entering the community we found numerous antiques stores and restaurants and at the top of the hill a small white snow covered church. Just like we would see in New England. While none of the stores were open we saw workers clearing the snow from the sidewalks and parking spaces in anticipation of a forthcoming business day.We understand that farming is a big part of the community however we were told that a several hundred acre industrial park was being readied for a large enterprise that would build auto batteries large enough to operate electric cars. At least that's all the talk around town and we did note the Governor had made an announcement to the effect a few months back.
The main focus in town is Main Street which you will see just after crossing the railroad tracks. First business on the right is
the Whistler Stop restaurant which we understand has excellent food. The town is unincorporated thus we could not locate a city hall or even a Chamber of Commerce. The town's historic district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places through the Nation Park Service and this includes 32 residential and business properties.
Last year one of the restaurants burned and it has since been rebuilt and is open as Tony York on Main. On the same street you will find The Serendipity Shop. Look for the Village Shop, The Raspberry Shop. the Sidetrack Shops Antique Mall, The Sisters Shop, Petticoat Junction, The Mercantile, and Shabby Chic Sherry. The community is small thus you can walk to any of the shops or restaurants. The day we were there we found plenty of parking although locals tell us parking is tight on week ends. We found a web site www.historicglendale.com There are three churches in town two of which sit side by side. Gilead Baptist on Gilead Church Road, and Glendale Christian at 119 North Main St and Glendale United Methodist at 118 North Main Street.
The small community is worth visiting even if you only have a
meal and an hour to spend while passing though. You call also get to Glendale via the West Ky Parkway by traveling east on KY 222.
