Jan 3 - Jan 4 - Peru - Puno - Lake Titicaca (Reed Islands)
Welcome to Lake Titicaca positioned at 3800 m above sea level. It is the highest lake in the world and is around 70kms long by 30 wide. Seems from the naked eye to more of a sea (absolutely massive).
We took off from Cuzco on an overnight bus last night and arrived in Puno around 7am to get straight on a 2 day tour on the lake visiting the local reed islands where people build floating islands and actually live on the lake itself. These islands are called the Uros Islands and survive mainly on subsistance and local tourism. Everthing folks is made of reeds.
We then kept motoring to Amantani where we stayed overnight with local families and attended a local discoteca which our 70yrs plus family. They where really nice and considering we couldnĀ“t speak with them we had a great time. We climbed to the top of a mountain there to get the views which where amazing. The discoteca was local live music and traditional dancing. Very funny stuff.
In the morning we got on the boat and motored to
Taquile Island and climbed again to the local town and had lunch there. These islands are home to some 1000 - 4000 inhabitants so massive, but still lots to look at and do.
After lunch we made it back to the boat and back on a 3 hour journey to Puno to stay the night and then in the morning head to Bolivia and Copacabana.
