Our next stop on our tour of the Thai islands was Ko Pha Ngan. We left Koh Tao on a rather overly full boat and 2 hours later were back on dry land. After much debate we got a tuk tuk to Chaloaklam for 150B each this is where we had to get longtail boat around a cove to our home for the night 5 nights - Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach). We booked our stay here months ago, after noticing how quickly accommodation was being snapped up in preparation for the New Years Full Moon Party. We were staying in Bottle Beach 2, the end resort and one out of only 4 quiet locally run resorts on the beach. Our beachfront bungalow cost 600B a night and was well worth it. The beach was amazing, possibly the one of the best beaches we’ve ever been too. Being only accessible by boat as the dirt track is horrendous, which we soon found out, it was very underdeveloped and quite.
We spent our days here chilling, sunbathing, eating and drinking and of course swinging in our hammock. Tony one day went for a walk to a view point the guidebook mentioned, he
return about 2 hours later rather sweaty and not very impressed with the view, although G begs to differ from the photos he got.
Another day we hired kayaks out and headed our into the big blue ocean, after half an hour G was tired and feeling a bit ropy from the sea rocking motion so T dropped her off and headed back out for a solo exploration.
Our main reason for coming to Koh Phanang was to celebrate the New Year in style, at The Full Moon Party which is held on Hat Rin on the south of the island. No one really knows how it started but it was definitely at Paradise Bungalows around the late 80s and something to do with a leaving do or Birthday party which fell on the night of a full moon, apparently it was that good the party revellers agreed to meet again for the next full moon and so it began.
So on New Year’s Eve, we headed down there at about 4pm on the back of a pickup truck via the dirt track at the back of our gaff, it took about an hour to get there
struggling up and down many hills. We had a wonder around Hat Rin first before heading to the beach where the party is held every month. It already had many people sitting around enjoying a beer, some already on buckets which they’ll probably regret starting on so soon later on in the night. We took our time getting into the party sprit not wanting to peak too early at about 9 it was kicking, all the bars with their massive wall of speakers blaring out all sorts of music and all sorts of light displays. It was quiet honestly bloody brilliant, there were fire dancers everywhere, a massive fire skipping rope and most importantly a ring of fire which tony successfully jumped through.
We saw in New Year’s dancing away and watching fireworks enjoying every moment. We danced, drank buckets and bumped into people we knew along the way. We even had to go on a shopping spree at 2am when Tony lost a flip flip!!! We eventually called it a day at 4am when there was a pickup truck heading back to our beach, we got back at about 6 and collapsed into bed. The rest of New
Years day was a wipe out, we pretty much spent it sleeping and floating in the sea.
Our time on Koh Pha Ngan couldn’t have been anymore perfect our home for 5 nights Bottle Beach 2 and of course partaking in the legendary Full Moon Party on New Year’s Eve!!!!
