Dec 20th - Dec 24th

We spent the last night of our road trip back at the cabin in the woods at Perth Hills so we could sample the famous pizza from Little Caesars in Mundaring. The pizzeria has won numerous awards all over the world including 4th place out of 450 entrants in the World Champions Pizza contest in Italy. As we didn’t get chance to go last time we were in town we decided to give it a try.

After spending what seemed like days (it actually was days because we had a menu with us in the car from our last visit to Perth Hills) deciding what tempting topping to go for we settled on Jane’s Addiction and Greek Lamb. Jane’s addiction involved marinated prawns, prosciutto, garlic cream sauce, wild rocket pesto and mozzarella while Greek Lamb combined marinated lamb with caramalized onion, fetta and tzatziki. Wow. There were all kinds of taste explosions going on although the prawn one was our favourite.

Unfortunately the hostel in Perth Hills has no air conditioning and the temperature in our room was 32degrees. It was a very sweaty night. You may be wondering how I can be so exact about the temperature… Simon is a bit of a weather geek and has bought his temperature gauge with him which he has utilised in Death Valley, the Blue Mountains and numerous beaches we have laid on all over the world. Another of his geeky habits is to keep a spreadsheet of all of our daily expenses separated into different columns. This is actually very useful and means we can keep track of what we are spending and see what we are averaging a day over the entire time we have been away. It helps keep us in check and makes me feel guilty enough to not indulge in vanilla lattes or magazines.

We arrived at Ocean Beach Backpackers on Cottesloe beach on Monday (21st). We are here for a week and have our own room with en-suite and a fridge. I booked and paid for this way back in April as accommodation in Australia gets snapped up quickly especially for Christmas and New Year.

In an effort to make us feel a bit festive (it really doesn’t feel like Christmas because it’s so hot and we haven't had to do battle in the supermarket over the last packet of stuffing) we bought some tinsel which we have draped over every available surface of our room. We have also been shopping for the essentials we need for this time of year - gin, bubbly, mince pies, Christmas pudding, cheese and biscuits and chocolate. It will be rather odd not enjoying a big roast turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas day and not seeing our friends and family but we are looking forward to smoked salmon, prawns and herby potatoes which we plan to eat outside overlooking the ocean during a break from sunbathing on the beach.

Yesterday evening (23rd) we went into Perth city centre to watch the free Nativity play that is held in the square. What a spectacle. For a free event it was really marvellous and included real live chickens, goats, a donkey and three camels! Not to mention an angel on stilts and a red-coated midget. As well as the traditional story being acted out there were performances of many popular Christmas songs complete with dance routines. It was a really good show and certainly attracted a huge crowd. Luckily we managed to get a seat but there must have been at least another hundred people standing.

Today (Christmas Eve) GMTV will be broadcasting from Cottesloe beach so we are planning on going along to see if we can get our ugly mugs on camera - look out for us!
