The Bintan trip was never part of our travel forecast for 2009. Ideas flew by during one of the nights in Halong Bay. Since none of us had left our footprints on the island, we decided to give it a go. 1 month later, we were on the island. Slight changes were made to the travel line up as SS was seconded to Shanghai for her business trip and Mapletree was simply caught up with her commitments at work.

4 of us arrived at the relatively "Ulu" Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal on the afternoon of 14th November 2009 while waiting for our 12.10pm ferry to set sail to the Riau Archipalego. Within the next 80 minutes, we managed to check in our room at the Nirwana Resort. The room was spacious and the staffs generally helpful. Call us cheapo - while our room commanded no view, we were generally not affected by the lack of it. The last week at work was insane with long hours and crazy deadlines. I just wanted a nice place to crash and do nothing.

Oh yes, CC and I did had our fair share of swimming at the resort's free-forming pool which commanded an excellent view of the South China Sea. For 2 days straight, heaven was kind to us by not raining all day and night so that we could swim to our hearts content. The same could not be said for the sunset nor the sunrise as the "egg yolk" was simply missing in action. Over breakfast table the following morning, we did had plenty of eggs to compensate for the disappointment.

Food within Nirwana Gardens was relatively pricey as I slowly fell in love with Gado Gado, an Indo salad where we had it for lunch and dinner. But it was a different world out there at Pasar Oleh Village where we had a rejunevating massage and a hearty lunch for less than SGD40, thanks to the tip-off from the resort's bell boy.

While the beach at Bintan resorts was never too outstanding, it offered a decent choice for us to break away and regain our sanity in a peaceful environment.
