A slight detour

Hmmm - not sure how to explain this, but it´s probably something to do with the 6 hour hike up a mountain we did the day before...we got to the airport here in Ushuaia this lunchtime for our flight to El Calafate to see the big glacier there. We had spent some of the previous evening and this morning deliberating over whether paying a lot of money for a 10 day boat trip to Antarctica was something we wanted to do, and having spoken to a number of people who¨d done it we were a little unsure whether to go for it.

In the end, we decided it´d be best to stick to the plan, and maybe come back later (as if). When we got to the checkin, however, the flight was delayed "for at least 4 hours" - a sign if ever there was one.

Rashly, perhaps, we asked a pretty bemused checkin man whether we could rebook for 12 days later...which we could. SO, a quick taxi to the agents in town and some hassle with payment and we¨re all booked up for Friday. We¨re feeling quite nervous, to be honest, and not a little bit stressed, as this is a) quite a cost, and b) a bit daunting ( I don¨t like boats)....this is not exactly the Larne - Stranraer ferry. It also delays things a bit in our schedule, so we¨ll most likely skip Calafate and the parks in that area (we¨ll have seen enough glaciers) and fly straight to Bariloche for some chocolate if the flights work out ok.

Still feeling a bit shaky a few hours on, so we had a pint or two to calm the nerves. Maybe we¨ll see the Orca¨s there, having failed to in Puerto Madryn?

We´re in a new hostel now, the other one being full when we embarrasingly went back havig left for the airport an hour earlier..not too bad, and it has some nice views over the town.

Why not watch a few DVD's to calm your nerves...
...I recommend 'Perfect Storm', 'Titanic' and 'The Poseidon Adventure'...
