Where in the world am I?!

Starting point: Winchester 20/3/2006.

I've now had a week off work, which I've managed to fritter away very effectively. It's amazing how compelling even the worst daytime TV can be when you know that everybody else is at work. However, there are only 14 short days to go now before I leave for the Dominican Republic and the first stage of my 'big adventure'. This means I have to start pulling everything together - including myself - to avoid any last-minute panic. My first challenge will be to fit everything I need to take into my rucksack; a measley 65 litres. This is going to be tough and I foresee several attempts and much soul-searching. There are, for example, few things that would be considered so vital that I would choose to take them with me instead of a good waterproof mascara. I know this isn't the true spirit of travelling and I hope my experiences over the next few months will change my priorities for the better, but for now I'm still in cosy (if cold) Winchester and it's all still theoretical.

Other tasks on my list for the coming week include learning how to use my new camera - a very generous

gift from my ex-colleagues - and to teach my technophobe mother how to use email and the internet. This last challenge could well prove to be the greatest I face in the next 6 months. It will certainly include the most shouting.

Much more enjoyable, albeit rather sad, will be getting together with friends on Friday for a going-away party. I've been planning my trip for nearly seven months now but it has only seemed real in the last month. Getting tenants into my house, leaving work, saying goodbye to friends, knowing that the next six months will change me and all my relationships has been both upsetting and strangely liberating. It's a bit like shedding an old skin but not knowing what the new one will look like: I might come back in October and pick up exactly where I left off or I might have totally new expectations and aspirations. Like I said, both frightening and exciting.

Still, this is all in the future. For the next 14 days it's all a bit more prosaic. Now, where did I put the manual for my camera?...

Good Luck
Hi Kit, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say good bye and good luck. We all think that you are really brave although we are all dead jealous as we have not had the guts to do the same. Mind you, I dont think Clive and the boys would be too pleased if I cleared off, although thinking about it, hmmmm, perhaps they would!! Dont worry because we will keep you up with the "Dave" fanclub gossip. Who is with who and where in the Country Sid's latest conquest is? Hope everything goes well and I am sure that you will have a great time so in true Steve style, glasses up............................!!!!!
