We arrived into Bangkok at half past midnight onto a bustling Khao San Road. The sounds from the car horns and the music pumping out from the bars, blasted in our ears. The smells were overwhelming; the sewer stench, the smell of chilli smoke from the street stall woks and barbecued chicken filled the air. It was a real feast for the senses. The bright lights lit up the street as if it were still daytime, with it, injecting us with new burst of energy. Once we found a half decent place to stay, we dropped our bags and headed out to explore the city.
It was just like walking onto a movie set. This place is amazing with so much going on everywhere we look. We spent a fantastic few days in Bangkok, much better than we could ever have expected. The shopping was incredible. We started in MBK - a massive seven-storey department store. We wandered around for hours checking out the bargains and sampling the food. At the weekend we experienced the giant Chatuchak markets, where everything imaginable was for sale, handmade silks, knock-off t-shirts, fluffy puppies and any souvenirs you could think of. We spent a full day here and still didn't see it all.
The nightlife on Khao San Road is one big multicultural festival. The atmosphere is electric. We met such weird and wonderful people as we were captured by the party atmosphere and danced until dawn in one of the many nightclubs.
Bangkok was incredible and we leave with fond memories. Our batteries were dead after all our exploring and clebrating so we set off for Ko Chang, Thailand's second biggest island and found a great little bungalow in a place called Lonely Beach. It was very chilled out and laid back with loads of rasta bars playing Bob all day long. As always, we rented bikes to explore the island and visit the other towns.
We met up with Goncalo and drove from beach to beach, stopping off for a swim whenever the heat got too much for us. The boys found a pier to dive off; it seemed perfect, no rocks around. In search of the 'perfect picture' I asked them to dive a few more times. But, on what we agreed would be "the last dive", both of them injured themselves. Paulo pulled a muscle in his neck and Goncalo got stung by a jelly fish! Our great day out ended with a trip to the hospital, two injections and a bag full of prescription drugs!
We left Ko Chang a couple of days later, this time in the direction Ko Phangan for the full moon party!
